Weird. Very unexpected. I'd have been surprised to even say he considered Bute stronger than Khomitsky, let alone strongest he ever faced.

Gaydarbek was nothing special and that loss was an exchange between Kazakhstan and Russia in those Olympics, so basically it was a fixed fight. So no wonder he doesn't consider Gaydarbekov anything special.

Ward was terrified of Bute and shamelessly ducked him.

I'll buy that he didn't think Bute's ratio of risk to reward floated his boat - not that he was "terrified" of him, though. :nono

So you're saying Golovkin threw that fight? Because Gaydar certainly won fair and square, and with a broken hand by all accounts.

It was a case of high risk. But it was definitely not a case of low reward. Beating Bute would have give him some rewards at the time.

That doesn't make the ratio winsome on its own, though. You're talking short-term value on a single fight. Ward had the chance to face all his tourney mates (even long after the S6 was over, just picking off the runners-up) to milk that for $$ spread over a few years. Half a dozen medium dollar matches trump one top dollar match, especially if the half dozen all happen to be lower risk. :good
