Gennady Golovkin says he will meet Floyd Mayweather at light-middleweight

What do you mean he doesn't fight there? He's fought there a few times and been very successful in all of them and looked good. GGG is barely bigger than him, he's a small MW. This fight should happen, but only reason it won't is because Floyd doesn't fight elite fighters in their primes. Had GGG lost a couple times by now but was still relevant floyd would fight him.

 

Golovkin is about 3 inches taller and 20 + lbs. heavier than Mayweather. They also fight two divisions apart. So in boxing terms, there is a big size difference between the two. It's not an impossible matchup to make, but I believe it's off base to say that they're almost the same size. Furthermore, Mayweather has already fought 3 prime, undefeated fighters.

 

You ignored the part where I said he only fight big money fights there.. If someone asked what weight class does Floyd Mayweather fight in, you would say WW But is also the JMW champ.. He fought there 3 times in 10 years and his whole career.. Two being record breaking ppv fights.. He doesn't regularly fight at 154.. Now you're only argument would be that Floyd should drop the belt.. If GGG beat Floyd, you think he would just stay at 154 defending it? No one would have a problem with him going back to 160 with no intention on going back to 154 without a big money fight...

Oh yeah, Floyd Mayweather is 38 and is fighting his last fights.. Who cares about how prime his opponents are but the people who still want to see him lose?

 

Its not impossible but for all practical reasons I can't see it happening. Neither man really needs the other to make a fortune and frankly its not worth it to either of them to make the necessary adjustments. For Floyd its a big risk at his age to move up and face a young destroyer like GGG. And its not just about denting his legacy. This is a match where he can be seriously hurt. For GGG he'd have to agree to a catch weight also placing himself at a disadvantage and should he manage to lose or look unimpressive against an aging foe on the way out of the game it might taint his marketability.. It's nothing for either of them to be ashamed of. No knowledgeable boxing fan should look back on this proposal 20 years from now and say " floyd ducked GGG" or vice versa. Some fights just aren't meant to happen..

 

What amazes me is that people would actually want this fight. For all the complaints about Floyd being "boring," putting him in there with a guy who will outweigh him by 20 pounds doesn't encourage an "exciting fight."

It encourages sticking and moving. It'd be boring as heck IMO.

And who knows what the weight loss would do to GGG. As a GGG fan, I think he should stay where he is comfortable and dominate. Dropping that kind of weight and then trying to move back up could have a negative affect on him.

 

It would be like Kovalev vs B-Hop all over again only very likely worse. You'd have a young punching destroyer vs a smaller, older defensive fighter trying every trick in the book to just " not get knocked out."

Well I agree that GGG isn't "obligated" to move up a division and fight Ward. No more than Ward is obligated to move up and challenge a HW. I don't get into that kind of nonsense.

I just know GGG passes my eye test. Very talented boxer at 160 pounds. Unfortunately for GGG, and the fans, is the 160 pound division isn't loaded with talent. We can't see "how good" GGG really is. His overall resume is lackluster due to the state of the 160 pound division IMO.

Golovkin vs Mayweather is not realistic. Has nothing to do with Golovkin being prime or undefeated.
