That's fine. I acknowledge and respect that and I give them both a lot of credit. But Hammer is trying to say that Tarver studied him, beat him, and now modern day fighters are privy to Roy's style. In other words, GG would have had no problem because of what Tarver did. It's laughable. GG has never seen anything like Roy at 25, and I don't think Tarver would ever have beaten Roy in his prime. The other thing is, even if you did study prime versions of Roy for hours on end, once you were in the ring, everything was different. Not forgetting of course that Tarver was also a southpaw. So again, I respect what you're saying, but there's no way GG would have been prepared for Roy, just because Tarver caught him after 50 fights at 35. :good
Oh, I agree with what you're driving at. I don't like Golovkin's chances against any version of Roy, pre-Ruiz. (*Except from when he was very green early in his pro career). :good
Yep I agree, the whole fight would look like the last 30 seconds of round 4 of the GGG vs Curtis Stevens match. This shows that he doesn't walk through punches because he can, it's because has has next to no defense what so ever, he would get backed up and either stopped or knocked out.
Roy was shot to **** when he moved back down in weight which I'm sure you know. I don't think he was motivated either anymore. Not sure if many remember this, but during his prime when he was beating everyone and would rarely lose a single round during this run, he visited Gerald McClellan in his wheel chair and saw for himself the damage that can be inflicted and it affected Jones. He didn't want to hurt people and land them in a similar state and kinda made him more tame in the ring. This is when he started basically carrying opponents more and didn't want to unleash RJ. But for anyone to put GGG in the same sentence as Roy is ridiculous -- at this point in time. GGG has still yet to defeat an elite opponent. And really is Canelo even elite? I don't think so but he's all we got. But all of this went on also when Tyson was destroying guys and some fans started comparing him to Ali and believing he was better. But that's also TYSON in the most popular division in boxing and Tyson was still a kid with crazy potential. GGG is already mid 30s and maxing on his potential. GGG still has a lot to prove before he's even mentioned with Roy Jones. And GGG is my favourite fighter lets not disregard, so this is straight up.
Right, Roy did not bring a new style to boxing, and no boxer since Roy has learned anything about countering that style. Roy was just the most amazing thing to ever behold - up until the DAY he was shot (which happened to be the day he fought Tarver). it was all a coincidence.
I should consider your opinion, but your vcash says otherwise. You apparently have a bad habit of confusing logic with emotion.
Roy said Jorge Castro was his toughest opponent and the one who he learned most of. Castro was a wild man who never bathed, lived under a bridge and only trained on public holidays. He was known by the nickname El Roña (Spanish for 'The Dirt') in his homeland. So if a crude brawler who slept rough and never trained was Roy's toughest opponent, what the hell do you think Golovkin would've been able to do to Roy? Golovkin trains like a demon and is better in every conceivable department than Castro was, with the possible exception of chin (Castro had a hell of a beard). Golovkin>>>>>>Castro and I love Castro too :think BM: You dont seem to have had that difficult a route to the top. But who is the toughest opponent youve fought, or who is the opponent you have learned most from? RJ: Jorge Castro from Argentina, because he was so strong, you could hit him with everything but he didnt stop, and he stayed just as strong for the entire fight. I had to box him and use my head, and not get caught up in his tactics. I had to be very mature at a young age. He had previously knocked a lot of people out, he beat a lot of people by playing games, because he was one of the smartest guys I ever fought. Reggie Johnson and John David Jackson both praised Castro's toughness and chin too. Reggie Johnson BEST CHIN Jorge Castro: Jorge Castro, who was 94-4-2 in our first fight in his backyard in Argentina. Thats 100 pro fights and he had not been stopped in his four losses. This speaks in volume of his concrete chin. John David Jckson BEST CHIN Jorge Castro: He took a lot of punishment long before he fought me. He had a tremendous chin. Believe it or not, I hurt him with a lot of good shots. I thought I was going to get him and be the first fighter to stop him but Jorge had a tremendous chin. he took a lot of punishment in that fight. I take my hat off to him. STRONGEST Castro: It didnt look like it but Jorge, he didnt have the body shape of a boxer but he was one strong guy, physically strong. Classic fight [YT]cB9_-ORyoZM[/YT]
GGG biggest fans should be in this thread shooting down anyone calming he is the greatest MW in boxing history. I believe GGG can accomplish awesome things in his career but his time is running short. Disrespecting the sport I love with such a claim does GGG no service it only hurts his reputation.
He hasn't even surpassed Martinez yet, he's on Pavlik's level currently, so I'm not quite ready to proclaim him TBE at MW yet.
There hasn´t been more dominant MW in 25 years, but he has still lot to prove. But I disagree on Sergio and Pavlik.. He has done better and more dominant work than Pavlik did and it´s not even close. Pavlik had one good win against Taylor, but he lost to Martinez and didn´t even fight at MW that many fights. Golovkin also made a clear statement against Macklin that he is better fighter than Sergio. Macklin said it himself even though Sergio is his good friend. Murray can state the same.. Barker fought Sergio, but thank his trainer for not letting him fight Golovkin etc. there are too many obvious signs that state Golovkin is superior MW.
Good post. I don't think he was that motivated to face Tarver at first, but he got under Roy's skin throughout 2003 and I think he was motivated when the fight was signed. But the weight was probably more on his mind than what Tarver was. Regarding GG, I too am a fan. I'm enjoying the ride. I really want to see him fight Canelo, Jacobs, Saunders and Eubank. But people are getting a little carried away. I don't know how anyone could say with certainty that they think he'd have beaten Roy in his prime.
