Sal, My main issue is some are acting like a journeyman, who beat guys like Hank often are better than top ten middle weights today. Sorry, that is not the case.
It seems to me that, if the man of the moment hasn't a win of any real note, then the next best thing, in order to elevate that man, is to focus on the losses of others - and of course the 'all important, doesn't mean a thing in real terms' eye test.
You're burying McVey. Mims was a 5'7" middleweight with just 13 Ko's in 103 fights, with 28 losses and six draws. He would not be a factor today. For those tired of me listing a dozen of journeyman a fighter lost to, just watch the film om Mims. Jacobs would have a relatively easy night. As for the middle weight division, they are getting taller in general, and weigh more on fight night. The division also includes world competition these days.
I'd like to bow gracefully out of this thread now. It's overdue. I was actually on my way out earlier when some guy stopped me at the door and pushed me back in. I think he's ok with me leaving now.
So for those 6 years Mims was a top ten ranked middleweight the competition was inferior to today's, is that what you are saying? That : Webb Downes Giardello Tiger Calhoun Olson Humez Langlois Basilio Castellani Fernandez Turner Fullmer Robinson Are inferior to todays top ten ie Alvarez Golovkin Jacobs Saunders Derevyanchenko Charlo Murata Andrade Lemieux N'Dam O Sullivan Yeah right ! Care to tell us what the bottom 8s best wins are? Here is Mims with banger Ruben Carter This content is protected He also went the distance with Robinson. "Sugar Ray Robinson pounded out a 10-round unanimous decision over tough and aggressive Holly Mims of Washington, DC, tonight in his first fight since winning the middleweight championship. The 23-year-old Mims, who had to drink several glasses of water at the weighing in ceremonies to come in over the 160-pound limit, opened an old cut over Robinson's left eye in the first round and surprised the champion several times by coming out of a crouch and scoring with lefts and rights to the jaw. Ray scored his only knockdown in the second round with a right and left to the head, but Mims was not seriously damaged. Mims was the aggressor most of the way." - Associated Press You had your rectum torn out over your Monzon threads now you're licking it and looking for allies, well your welcome to this smug *****!lol
And Canelo, one of Golovkin's best wins, is a 5'7" fatboy who struggled to knock out welterweights and campaigned with his lover/mentor to steal some of the most hotly contested decisions in recent boxing history. Trout, Lara, Cotto, the ghosts of these middling talents that either proved little or proved mediocrity haunt Canelo's dreams and stalk the deserted clenbuterol factories of Mexico. In the 60's he would have been a speedy light heavy with little power, concrete shoes and a terrible gas tank. He would have been a nobody today, another meaningless insult for you to disparage the old times with.
Hank had over 90 fights he was stopped only once by Bob Foster and he had to fight him twice to accomplish it! Hank beat George Benton who exactly has Jacobs beaten who was that good?
This is it. As much as I like Jacobs and he has shown some good stuff, here and there, he has not really been pushed, in boxing terms - and the lack of challenges doesn't really help, in the long run. No more was this evident, than against Golovkin; a bout in which, in my opinion, Jacobs just didn't push the envelope.
As there is a few "heightist" comments re' Mims, Tiger, it may be worth noting that 5' 7-8" Henry Hank, easily beat several world rated lightheavys. One of these was over Chic Calderwood, Who had a solid win over Willie Pastrano. As has been said it took the towering dynamite puncher Bob Foster, 2 fights to be the only one to stop Hank. Yes, he lost a lot of fights, but like the rest of his contemporaries, he avoided no one. Danny Jacobs may be 6' 1", but would you fancy him taking on Kovalev, Beterbiev etc! Back to Tiger, a lot of his stellar wins have been cited over the numerous posts. He did beat plenty of other good middles ; Undefeated ,until Tiger beat him 3 times, Gene "Ace" Armstrong, Victor Zalazar, Billy Pickett, who beat Harry Scott in the UK, Jose Gonzalez, Don Fullmer, Rocky Rivero, while most of the time, I remember reading, living in a hotel in New York with his family. Lightheavies Torres twice, Roger Rouse, Andy Kendall and in The Ring's fight of the Year, Frank De Paula. Again, he lost a lot of fights, but look at who, and how often he fought. Boxing Illustrated, January 1963 - " After his bruising victory over Gene Fullmer, new middleweight champ D... Tiger was showered with praise. But the highest tribute came from a veteran ringsider who said, "He would have given Harry Greb and Mickey Walker plenty of hell." I think this observation indicates that "old - timers" can appreciate the present and the past.
Shadablad, I've noticed you like to shorten up people to suit a topic. You've done this twice in a week. Canelo is listed at 5'8" tall, sometimes 5'9" tall. I never saw a credible source that said 5'7" tall. Fat boy, he was muscled up. No power? Says you. 34 Ko's in 52 fights suggest otherwise. I guess Canelo's biggest problem for people like you is he didn't lose or draw to several journeyman types, or lose more often than not to top ten opponents to be called great. For shame! If you watch him, he's actually pretty good on defense with a counter. A very good chin Solid power. Good hand speed.
