GG slipping probably is not the reason. More likely the choice of munguia is more to do with him being Mexican. It's the mans nationality ...keeping the Mexican connection alive, pandering to Mexican power and $$$$ in today's boxing world. I think that's the reason munguia might be chosen over spike or someone else...

Say what you will about Golovkin vs. O'Sullivan, it beats Golovkin vs. rando super welter. :deal:

The guy does have a higher KO ratio than Spike but has fought nobody.

Andrade and Spike out there begging for the fight... And they legit went for Munguia?! I don't even think Spike is of the quality.

Povetkin at least got Duhappaus with like 4 days' notice. Golovkin had 6 weeks and legit guys raising their hands.

Golovkin won’t even break a sweat. Some people seem to rate Sullivan much more highly than I do. GGG via stoppage before the 6th.

Oh man, I'd forgotten all about this...quaint little habit of Spike's. :risas3:

How on earth would GGG react? On the one hand there's his smiling and sportsmanlike goodboy image to maintain. On the other, I can not see him just letting Gary put his mouth on him and not do something about it.

Update: still nothing finalized. :nusenuse: Spike has outlasted many other names at the forefront of the war of attrition, however, and he's still in play for 5/5 on regular HBO.

At this point it will be Spike, Martirosyan, Derevyanchenko, Andrade, Zurdo, or Charlo - in descending order of likelihood.

I'd give probably 1/2 odds Spike gets picked. 3/8 for Nightmare. 11/1 for Hitman or Zurdo, half that for Andrade or Derevyanchenko.

    105-7-1 (100) in favor of GGG :sisi1

I wonder, if a poll has been up for a comparable amount of time (and thus meaningful as scientific data gathering) where a GGG vs. Martirosyan or Derevyanchenko wouls stand by this point in comparison.

Martirosyan yes, Derevyanchenko would be closer.

P.S. Martirosyan claims on Instagram that he's got the fight.

The most recent stuff I'm seeing is 50-50 between "confirmations" that a Spike fight is finalized and "confirmations" that Martirosyan has shoehorned himself in.

Martirosyan did "get" the fight but the IBF/WBA/WBC together decided to block it. Either Derevyanchenko or Spike it is, I think more likely the latter

Yeah his team has been sounding optimistic for the entire last week and increasingly more so in the last 24 hours.

Lots of ups and downs just since yesterday!!!!

    1. First, a buyout offer was made by ESPN and Bob Arum to air the fight on ESPN (whether the regular linear TV channel or the new paid-subscription mobile app ESPN+) but Loeffler politely declined and said that He prefers to keep GGG an exclusive HBO property
    2. Second, last night it was being reported the May 5th date was in jeopardy of being canceled altogether.
    3. Third, it was reported just within the last hour that Las Vegas has been ruled out as the NSAC has refused to be a part of whatever Golovkin fight materializes for the date at this point. The new location will be California, with that state's commission fully on-board and committed to saving the date and not wasting Golovkin's training camp.
    4. Lastly, there has apparently been a call to appeal the rejection of Vanes Martirosyan and the sanctioning bodies will give it serious consideration.

In summation: the fight might not happen but the plan is still for a deal to be made, for May 5th, in California, on regular HBO, with the current frontrunners being Spike and (if the appeal is upheld) Vanes.
