So in summary, all the partisan cries of "robbery" on both sides (and yes it has been on both sides; those claiming that Canelo was robbed are the minority but a vocal minority, while the mainstream view seems to be that Golovkin defeated him in a fight that was competitive but still had a clear victor that just happened to be the more consistent - but at times less effective - aggressor, with Canelo's hyper-focus on his sometimes overly precious defense in the rounds he lost eliminating what could have been scoring opportunities to keep him in the hunt) that I've been hearing for the last four months - full of bologna.

This was in the neighborhood of a draw, for sure, though I think Golovkin if anybody ought to have been declared the winner.

    Adelaide Byrd, though...wtf.

Also it's interesting that you gave the 6th round to Alvarez. I actually thought he had more of a case of winning the 8th and 9th than in the 6th, but I'll have to watch that game. Certainly the big uppercut he landed may have played a role in you giving that round to Alvarez, but I thought Golovkin work rate probably was enough to give him that round. But surely we can agree that it was a hard round to score.

The 9th? That's maybe the only period in the fight where a little part of my psyche (even knowing on a rational level that what my brain was receiving was four-month-old data, not live) kept instinctively flinching, worried that Canelo might get kayoed.

    9th >>>>> 6th, if you're Golovkin, and vice-versa if you're Álvarez.

Not only did I have Canelo sweeping the first 3 rounds, I had him sweeping the first 4 rounds. (thought admittedly the 4th was very close and Golovkin seemed to be getting more used to Canelo's movement every round) But until Golovkin landed that big right hand with a minute left in the 5th I thought Canelo was in complete control. It just seemed to me that Canelo was befuddling Golovkin early on with his movement, superb defense and elusiveness. And it seemed to take Golovkin 4 or 5 rounds to really get into the fight.

Canelo seemed to pretty clearly get the better of Golovkin in rounds 1-3, and for what it's worth most fans, even those that had Golovkin winning, had Canelo winning at least 2 out of the first 3 rounds. (and at least had him winning round 2 or 3) You are definitely in a very small minority to give Golovkin both rounds 2 and 3, which were possibly Canelo's best rounds of the fight.

The 4th round was the first round that I thought Golovkin may have won, though I still thought Canelo edged it, it was clearly much closer than the first 3 rounds. And then while Canelo started the 5th well, Golovkin turned the tide with that big right hand and carried that momentum from the end of the 5th into the 6th I thought, even though Canelo still landed that big uppercut in the 6th, it seemed that was the first round where Canelo was visibly fatigued and Golovkin's superior work rate started to show itself. Though I don't think it's unreasonable to give Canelo the 6th, I personally had that round for Golovkin. And 7-9 were much like the 6th, the 7th had both men landing more jabs.

And you rightly had Alvarez sweeping the last 3 rounds. Just understand that with you giving Canelo the 6th, if you give Canelo either the 2nd or the 3rd, two rounds that Lederman gave to Canelo, you have a draw, and if you give Canelo both the 2nd and the 3rd you have him winning. So I would say you have a very interesting scorecard IB. Not criticizing it. just shocked that you gave Golovkin rounds 2 and 3, kinda of surprised you gave Canelo the 6th. And I would say both the 4th and the 5th were pretty much toss-up rounds in my opinion.

    Additional thoughts:

    • Canelo despite his thin résumé in the division (having never fought a natural actual MW at the actual MW limit before this) is an elite middleweight, that is no longer in question. He still has flaws, still learning on the job a dozen years after breaking into the business in his teens, but he's the real deal @ 160lbs and to be favored in anything but a Golovkin rematch and perhaps versus BJS who poses that stylistic poison to Canelo: somebody that can out-slick him.
    • Golovkin has lost a step, as to be expected; he isn't quite looking his age but cracks are starting to show. That he was able to hang with this version of Canelo at this late stage attests to his greatness.
    • In a rematch, with another year (or even just the bulk of it) of deterioration on him, you can not count Álvarez out. His speed advantage will only become more pronounced and he seemed to be keyed into something in the final quadrant of the match, perhaps something "clicked" and he now just has Golovkin's # (or perhaps it was a matter of him outlasting the older man, but that's still a negative for Golovkin whose conditioning isn't going to suddenly improve upon that form in his late 30's). We shall have to wait and see...
    • Still very weird to me that Álvarez was the "elusive boxer" in a fight rather, as I'm so conditioned to remembering him as the lummox in the ineffective aggressor role, left churning air for long stretches by Trout, Mayweather and Lara. The kid actually can be slick when he wants to - and he showed it versus a phenomenal (if past his prime) stalker/puncher nonpareil.

I'll have to watch it again honestly. I think we're looking at different things, but I appreciate the time you put in and you're perspective. If you could, please comment on the end of the 7th round and how close you thought that round was. Granted, I think it's very reasonable to give the 7th to Golovkin as I attested to the fact (yesterday) that I saw Canelo getting hit with too many jabs for my liking, but the way Canelo started (first 30 seconds) and ended the round did to a large extent close whatever Gap Golovkin created in the middle of the round with his landed jabs. Any guess as to where that Canelo uppercut with 17 seconds left landed? chin / chest / body? It looked hard and Lampley said it stopped Golovkin in his tracks. That kind of finish to a round can steal a fighter a round. Not sure it did for Canelo, but it certainly made that round harder to score.

Now we await the rematch... I think Canelo clearly outboxes GGG this time around and wins a very clear UD.

@IntentionalButt At least you can acknowledge how close of a fight it really was and could see it swing in canelos favor and not throw a fit like a lot of the posters on this board did when I scored it 7-5 to Canelo on the day of.

I very much appreciate that from IB. When I started reading his RBR summary I was like he's just going to give Golovkin every round vs Canelo like he did Mayweather, but then I saw he gave Canelo the 6th and the last 3 so all of a sudden I took it more seriously.

The 10-2 card is what really ****ed everybody up, had it been given to Canelo on the lines of 7-5 maybe Canelo would have a lot more respect from this board as deserved, since he absolutely put up a great fight.)

Guys like UTF aka Scuba Fury and The anatola of crapola need to come to their senses and score the fight accordingly and not sit there on a high horse and think a 115-113 score to Canelo is beyond the realm of reason like they did that day, and still to this day.

Byrd gave Canelo the 1st and Golovkin the 4th, just like you did.

Byrd gave Canelo the 6th, just like you did.

Byrd gave Golovkin the 7th, just like you did.

Byrd gave Canelo the last 3 rounds, just like you did.

So that's 7 rounds that you and Byrd agree on.

Out of the 5 rounds that you and Byrd disagree on, 2 of those rounds (rounds 2 and 3) Lederman and Byrd both had Canelo winning. The only rounds that Byrd disagrees with you and Lederman are rounds 5, 8 and 9.

Just think about that. With you giving Canelo the 6th, her card isn't really that different from yours. Now, in round 5 you commented on some of Alvarez's work in the first half of the round. (slick movement, good left hook, right hands, etc) That's why I thought round 5 was a toss-up round. Alvarez was winning that round before that big right hand by Golovkin with a minute left. So given how well Alvarez was doing in the early stages of that round, I don't think it's unreasonable for Byrd to give that round to Canelo.

So taking that into account, given that you gave Round 6 to Canelo , all that it really comes down to as far as Byrd is concerned is rounds 8 and 9.

Show me where I said 7-5 Canelo cardwas outside the realm of possibility instead of trying to come up with idiotic nicknames like a high-school lose, you lying, dishonest moron?
