Gennady Golovkin vs Thomas Hearns

So exactly as I said it was his first real MW fight. I'm aware of the tuneup fights he had before

 

Lol , Sutherland got in the ring with Spinks, and Singletary fought Minter prior to that … but Sutherland and Singletary aren't "really" boxers .. Hearns was moving up for 2nd time, it is a challenge, no gimmies there. Below Hearns talks about one of his toughest nights ever in Boxing against Sutherland

It all falls down to wether GGG can take those right hands because early on he would be eating them, Golovkin can be hit but his chin seems rock solid.
If he comes through that he’ll wear Hearns down and eventually take him out.

 

I'm not aware Sutherland fought Minter.

So you are saying Tommy was not a natural middleweight, or you want to prove a point regardless of anything else. The fact is Singletary was a middleweight who fought Fletcher and Minter and even Sutherland, whom Tommy fought in 1983 in I think Atlantic City and went 10 rounds. Sutherland prior to fighting Hearns fought Spinks two times. I think you are putting Hearns post Hagler fights and the ones he looked bad after a tough few years of going up and down in weight even from 175 back down to 160, then up against to 168. But Hearns was a top notch fighter with speed. To say, oh GGG would do to him what he did to that Macklin guy or Rosado.. It isn't that easy. Virgil Hill demolished a lot of guys. Joe Lasisi, outboxed even decent fighter Czyz and later Tate, yet Hearns outboxed him. If Hearns came in shape and ready to use the jab and counterpunch I don't think there is a doubt he would win. That is just an opinion.

 

It is a whole different situation taking Hearns right hand compared to some or most of the guys he fought at middleweight, and I respect him. He was relentless and overwhelmed those guys, I just don't think they were elite fighters who could give as good as they were getting from GGG.

 

great article. Sutherland I just read won the vacant 168 pound title when he beat Singletary. I forgot that.

Why do you keep using Hill as an example. Yes that was a GREAT win by Hearns. But Hill didnt want to brawl he tries to out box Hearns.

GGG's footwork is so good he could force anyone to brawl but against Hearns he wouldn't even need to force it. Hearns could never resist brawling if the opponent wanted to brawl. When you get down to it GGG can take the firepower while Hearns can't

 

I'll take Golovkin and fairly confidently, too. The question isn't about Hearns' skills or speed. Anybody can see that he was outstanding.
The question is about Hearns' durability. He'd have to stick and move all night long against a guy that specialises in cutting the ring off and who has a heavy and accurate jab himself. Simply, I think Golovkin can take what Hearns dishes out but Hearns can't take what Golovkin fires back. If Hearns had chin in the same magnitude as he had punching power, it might be quite a different story.

Both GGG and Canelo would get KTFO by Tommy.

 

He doesn't have to stick and move, he can very simply outbox GGG in the center of the ring.

Again, Canelo made GGG miss nearly 70% of his punches. Hearns is a superior boxer.
