He fought very timidly and barely even landed anything significant on Canelo. He even neglected the body attack. Why? Because Canelo was to fast and sharp with his punches. You want to see one of the fastest, sharpest, strongest punchers EVER? Watch a Thomas Hearns fight.
If you mean that GGG wouldn't ever lose to Barkley or be badly wobbled by Roldan and Kinchen, I agree with you. Yes, the Kinchen fight was at SMW, but Kinchen wasn't heavier in the ring than GGG typically is.
Canelo waited for GGG to age, was on PED's and lost both fights! Canelo is quick on the counter which is why you did not see GGG go to the body often. Hearns is nothing like Canelo. Your description of Hearns is Correct. If he had Canelo defense and chin I’d pick him to win.
Hearns never once looked comfortable against a puncher above WW, and GGG is a big puncher who's around 170 lbs in the ring, with great chin, stamina and strength and very solid all around skill. Not to mention a killer jab. Let's lose the rose tinted glasses for a second - Roldan did absolutely nothing better than GGG, same with Kinchen and Barkley had reach and height on him but nothings else.
let me see. Ernie Singletary, Murray Sutherland IBF 168 pound champ, James Shuler, Doug Dewitt (WBO champ), Juan Roldan, Iran Barkley.. And fought at 168 against James Kinchen, Michael Olajide and Ray Leonard. Pretty good resume at 160 and 168.
Roldan took guy out of their rhythm. Nunn said he was the hardest puncher he ever faced and so did Hearns. So, whatever that means. Hearns got bored and liked to brawl, but to say he wouldn't stick to his gameplan and jab and land his right prior to Hagler fight, or post might not be true. He would land it.
Oh. well I mentioned who he fought. The interesting thing about Iran Barkley is had Hearns not been careless, he was going to stop Barkley in the next round.. Via bodypunches.
Didn't Nunn say that Curry was the best he fought? Anyhow they lost decisively to other fighters so clearly this is not true. And Hearns didn't only have trouble with Roldan, but also Barkley and Kinchen. All three inferior fighters to GGG. But I'm not saying Hearns can't win, but my money is on GGG even though Hearns will make it tough for him.
I agree! But I don’t need to denigrate Hearns to make a case for GGG, Hearns is one of my favorites, but going at 160 against a guy who will be a consensus top 15-20 MW even by strict standards, who has a big punch and good chin does not give me confidence in Tommy at this weight. I wouldn’t be surprised at all if Hearns could win, I stopped getting surprised about him years ago. I just don’t see it as the likely outcome.
inferior is a matter of discussion. Barkley won 3 titles in 3 weights. Roldan, had a wild style which gave Hagler, Hearns and Nunn problems. Kinchen? a few months after Barkley. It is about looking at his bad fights and not focusing on the good ones, which Hearns fought Cuevas,Benitez,Leonard,Duran, Hagler, Hill 6 Hall of Fame fighters. Canelo has fought one and has not won that fight, yet you say he would beat Hearns because Hearns struggled with Kinchen and had a tough fight. Hearns is much better than Jacobs and hit harder. GGG needs a win over an elite someday, or he really cannot be in the discussion for being elite.
Jacobs goes life n death with Sergiy Dervychenko , life n death with Suleki , falttened by Mora , creamed by Piirog , yet he came within a whisker of beating GGG. Without the drop , Golovkin would have lost to Jacobs. Look how Brook was lighting him up with 1-2s and uppercuts in the early rounds , now picture 6'1 Tommy Hearns with a 78' reach doing the same These factors tell me Hitman has a good enough chance of beating GGG.
They were good fighters that could pose many fighters problems on their day, but they were inferior to GGG. I was looking at punchers at MW. Since GGG is a MW puncher. I love Benitez, but how Hearns did against him has little bearing on this match-up since he was so completely different to GGG.
