    Great point. But that brings up another issue. If that was pre-Ramirez Rosario, Hector may as well could have lost the fight.

    Not sure this qualifies, but I think the most controversial opinion I have is that Canelo beat GGG in their first fight. It was close enough that it could have gone to GGG without it being a bad decision, and maybe I'll score it for him next time I view it, but the times I've scored I've had it for Canelo.

    Here's one that's extremely heretical:

    Almost every champion after Sullivan lived a boring life. And yes, that includes the Mob enforcers, murderers, etc. Sullivan did what he did when it was relatively fresh and adventurous, building a new sport. After that, it's not really the same. They're just athletes doing a job in an increasingly domesticated industrial society.

    The champions themselves are often very impressive men, and their in-ring performances are incredibly impressive. But in terms of whether I'd be riveted reading their biographies, eh.

    There's still an instinct on my part to say, "Yeah, but it's still just a sport."

    Sullivan manages to bypass that knee-jerk instinct only because Sullivan's life came before gloved professional boxing was institutionalized. He was building something new with only a few half-finished blueprints from the bareknuckle era. There was also still something a bit more exotic about the late Victorian world Sullivan inhabited than the marginally tamer world that grew up around Johnson as Johnson's reign progressed. Ditto Dempsey and Ali, but moreso.

    A matter of taste, I admit.

    I understand the logic. Although Jack Johnson in particular is an interesting one for refusing to accept the segregation in the sport and the country. He openly lived his life as a gigantic middle finger to the segregation and racism, and seemingly did stuff just to **** off the whites entrenched in the system.

    It's a different sort of thing, of course, but as far as a fighter who had an interesting and crazy life to read about, he is up there at the top.

    It's pretty out there to pretend like critical opinions of Ali is in any way heresy on this forum. Someone actually posted believing he was 0-3 against Norton as his "heresy"... Jesus, how often don't you see that being said?

    Being critical of Ali on this forum is about rebellious as walking around with White Fragility under your arm in Berkley.
