I was watching George Benton, later the great trainer, on MSG network from when he was a contender, fighting Ruben "Hurricane" Carter. Carter won but it was a very good fight. They pointed out that Benton never got to fight for the title. Just points out how different things were when there was just one world champion. It was not easy to get a title shot when there's only one. Of course that's the way it really should be, but today a contender like Benton would certainly get a shot at one of the many strapholders.
Right. Nowadays they would make Dick Tiger the "super champion" and make Carter and Benton fight for the regular title.
and joey giardello would be the diamond champion and lamotta is champion in recess...robinson could be champion emaratus
the look Benton gave oliver mccall when he refused to fight in second match with lewis is ****ing priceless.....
