so my little sister is officialy my sister cause when asked in school to do a project on a famous canadian she picked George Chuvalo(shes watched ALOT of boxing with me) and I know he never won the world title, but he was ranked top 10 contender for longer than anyone else ever at heavyweight, was never knocked down, fought in probably the best era of heavyweights ever, and has been a great person outside the ring. so what do you all think? should Chuvalo get into the IBHOF?
No Technically he wasn't that good but if there ever was a "HOF of chins" he would be right up there with La Motta.
Pretty much sums it up. OK fighter, but you could make armor out of his chin and be damn near invincible.
Nah, he was a good fighter, a great opponent but lost every time he stepped up to the top level of his era. His best (and honestly only "good" win) was against Jerry Quarry. He lost against every other ATG or top level guy he ever faced. His life story is pretty ****ed up, 2 sons lost to OD's and another son and his wife committing suicide. Sad story. Tough SOB though.
Chuvalo was a great fighter. His record speaks for itself. Absolutely -- he belongs in the "Hall of Fame". He is more deserving than many who are already in there.
Exactly. Chuvalo is a legend, and rightfully so. But HOF?? No way, not even with their lax standards.
In the history of Boxing noone has been ranked in the top10 at heavyweight longer than George Chuvalo. Best chin in the history of the sport. not one knockdown in 93 fights HOF no doubt
if you ask george chuvalo,he'll tell you he had 97 fights.he counts the 4 boxers he knocked out on the same night in 1956 in the jack dempsey tourament which would put him at 68 knock out wins
The first pro fight I saw in my life was Joe Frazier vs. George Chuvalo at MSG back in the sixties. Frazier stopped him by a cut in what? 4 rounds? 6 rounds? Anyway, I don't think Chuvalo really belongs in the HOF. He was a tough cat who could take a lot of punishment, but besides the Canadian title, he didn't do a whole lot down here except absorb punches.
There were some very good highlights in your post regarding Chuvalo that may qualify him though. Being the longest ranked contender and never being knocked down in a strong era has to count for something. He also had a rather long list of good wins over various named opponents who's careers spanned from the 50's to the 70's like, Jerry Quarry, Cleveland Williams, Howard King, Yvonne Durelle, Bob Cleroux, Doug Jones, and Mike Dejohn. That's a pretty damn good list of opponents. He held the Canadian heavyweight title for a long time and on a few separate occasions I believe. Given that Cleveland Williams and a number of other fighters were inducted into the hall of fame, my answer would have to be yes. There have been many lesser acheivers who have been voted in. Chuvalo made a name for himself and for that he deserves all due recognition.
he beat mike dejohn, doug jones, manual ramoes, jerry quarry.he did a lil in the states had a few fights at msg.give the man a little credit ok
thats true, but he was brutally robbed against Ernie terrell, so he should have won the WBA belt. How long would he have kept it? Dont know, maybe not too long, but he still should have been a title holder. And if he gets the decision that he rightfully earned, he his chances of getting in the Hall improve significantly. His fight with Patterson (1965 Ring mag FOTY) could have easily been a draw as well.
