Just watched a documentary about George Chuvalo (retired with a boxing record of 72-18, fought the best, Ali/Foreman/Fraizer during the golden era of boxing, he was never knocked down once in his whole career)....what a sad life he had....lost 2 of his sons from drug overdoses....another son commited suicide as did his wife.....to stay sane through all that....that takes mental strength.....something he clearly has in abundance.... you are bang on man. he does constant tours up here on drugs and his sons. you can see the hurt in his eyes but he pushes it back to get the point across. the man is a legend and a true warrior in every sense
You said it man, huge mental strength, how he hung though through all that I dont know, that's a role model for you.
I knew about George's three sons, but I've never heard the story told quite like that. And by the way, in the documentary "Facing Ali" George STOLE THE SHOW!
damn right! another documentary worth watching is "Last Round". It's a brilliant look at chuvalo's life.
He's fantastic in Facing Ali. He really helps to put the whole story in context. He's almost like the narrator, more so than the other fighters. Ron Lyle too, but not as much. That said, everybody has their moments in that film. I really dig it.
George is the man... I had the pleasure of meeting him a couple times at events in Toronto... humble, funny, down to earth guy... and amazingly after all the punishment he took in a career that spanned 3 decades (not to mention his tragic personal life) he's still sound as a pound... no lisp, slurs or stutters what so ever. Unbelieveable. One tough Croatian-Canadian SOB!
The amazing thing, through all of the beatings he is probably the most intact of any fighter of that era. Loved him on Classic boxing with sugar and kenny.
