George Chuvalo vs. Jerry Quarry: Was it a fix?

Just off the top of my head: Not refereeing but judging his card for Benitez-Palomino was an absolute joke and his excuse “the sun was in my eyes” made a lot of people chuckle. Ive seen some question his refereeing job on both Griffith-Hayward 1 and Rodriguez-Briscoe 1. Griffith-Hayward 1 was close but clear for Hayward in my opinion. Hayward dominated the first half of the fight and landed some hellacious shots. The really odd thing about Clayton here that stands out is his score for the final round which he had even though Griffith was coming on like a freight train. He had the right guy winning but his card is so weird. Ive seen some criticize him for breaking the fighters too quickly in Rodriguez-Briscoe 1. This to me is more of a preference than an outright example of favoritism. He broke them up quick, true, but I like a ref who keeps the action flowing and fluid so... guys who like Briscoe are going to complain that it upset his chances (because he wasnt competetive at long range) others wont mind and just say thems the breaks.

 

Liston/Martin a fix ! judging by the right hand Martin hit Sonny with NO! I would say there are easier ways to fix a fight from Sonnys perspective. keep well.

December 1969 was interesting. First we had Martin upset Liston. Six days later we had Chuvalo upset Quarry. A week after that, the Ellis-Peralta bout was cancelled on less than 24 hours notice. Later in the month we finally have Frazier vs. Ellis signed and scheduled. Then at the end of the month we have Chuvalo pulling out of a scheduled February 16th (Frazier-Ellis undercard) rematch with Quarry.

 

ZACK CLAYTON DID A TERRIBLE JOB, NOT GONNA STAND FOR ANY HOLDING AND HITTING, GOODNESS THATS A LAUGH, AND THATS ALL CHUVALO DID!

 

Unfortunately it wasn’t a fix. My trainer was one of Quarry’s main sparring partners for the first 3 years of Quarry’s career and said Quarry despite having elite talent had a bad habit of tuning in and out midfight, which cost him in some of his important fights. My trainer attributed this to Quarry not always getting the optimal amount of sleep due to partying.

Jerry was not partying when he was training.

 

Ellis had 3 title fights nixed in 1969, I wonder why he just did not go ahead and fight Billy Joiner after he upset Bob Cleroux (Cleroux was signed to Fite Ellis, and took Joiner on as a "warmup"). Joiner attained a #10 ranking

Like Randy Neumann 1973 (example) had he upset Quarry, he would have been contracted to fite Ron Lyle.

 

I know that the two of three fights that were nixed in 1969 was Ellis defending his title against Gregorio Peralta and against Henry Cooper.

 

I've knocked someone out in the same way. You hit the temple and the brain bounces from 1 side of the skull to the other. It's delayed after the punch

 

Foreman's corner was not thrilled with Ali's holding pushing head down antics in Zaire (Clayton Referee) People who think he did an excellant job QUARRY-CHUVALO. Need just watch George foul, Quarry "Irish up" retaliated a few times. I mean George was holding and whaling!

I guess one judge counted those fouls as points had it 3-3!

Both fighter's earned their pay in this one. It was an action packed heavyweight fite!
