Talking about strength. Why does Cleroux never get mentioned? He was a bit unimaginative as a fighter, no less so than Chuvalo, but he was ridiculously strong. Strong as an ox. Uber tough too.
Against Chuvalo he won 2 of the 3 meetings. Cleroux was never stopped in his career. Always had a tougher time with slick boxers, as few could out tough him. Bob Cleroux, seems to be forgotten today. He had hopes of fighting Patterson for the title, but lost to Zora Folley. Years later in 68, lost in a tuneup fight with a fight against Jimmy Ellis in the works. He was 6'2" and 205 in his prime. One tough French Canadian.
I started a thread on him several years ago, but got few responses. I agree that he seems to have been brushed aside with time. Being too young to have seen him fight, I too have wondered what he looked like on film and concur that his resume reflects a very tough opponent indeed.
Ive seen 4 or 5 of his fights. All three of his Chuvalo fights, a clip of one of his Foley fights, and I think the McNeeley fight. He was good. Not a great boxer but a good, come forward bruiser. Very strong, very tough. I think if he had the stick-to-itivness of Chuvalo he could have gone a lot further. He seems to have taken his losses to heart and fallen off the map after them rather than getting back on the horse. I seem to remember he had an injury or something which hampered him after the Folley fight. Watching him fight Chuvalo was impressive. Chuvalo was considered to be pretty strong and at one point Cleroux threw Chuvalo to the canvas with one arm. Some of those French Canadians were ridiculously rugged.
Brutal fight, similar to Lyle's fight with LeDoux, but a prime Lyle was superior and would win by majority decision.
That may be true, but according to his record he did come back and avenge an early loss of his to a fighter named Buddy Turman and also manged to win two out of three against Chuvalo. So I think he did have some fighting heart and the ability to rebound from a defeat. Shame that he lost that fight to Billy Joiner or whatever his name was. Had he beaten him he would have gotten a shot at Ellis's title.
