Never was dropped, took alot of shots from muhammad ali, jimmy ellis, joe frazier, and last but not least george foreman (who is known to be the heaviest hitter in boxing history). who else do you think surpasses chuvalo's hard steeled chin?
Tony Galento might. He was no defensive stylist, went over 100 fights before Louis finally decked him, and boxed in an era of six ounce gloves. (He's also the only man to come off the deck to return the favor to Louis.) Chuvalo has always protested that his defensive skill was underrated (ditto LaMotta).
Hmm. Well, Galento was certainly dropped hard by Louis, and dropped very very hard at that. Isn't the epitome of a chin never going off your feet no matter what kind of abuse you're receiving? Like McCullough?
Once getting up to a hundred fights, it can be just a matter of time. Do you believe Bonavena legitimately decked Chuvalo? Although I thought I'd toss Galento's name in for consideration, I too would tend to lean towards George on this one.
Mhm. I agree with you that Galento is among the very elite of heavyweights chin wise. I remember watching his fight with Baer a while ago. Baer bludgeoned him into submission and had him badly hurt more then once. Not surprising considering it was Max doing the punching but this was sandwhiched in-between Baer's losses to Nova and he most definitely wasn't the fighter he once was, and that makes it especially bad in Baer's case.
To me, it looked like Ringo outmaneuvered him and caught him out of position. As referee, I probably would have scored that, but it was largely a judgment call. Very, very close. They should have had a rematch.
both those guys have been on the floor, they don't challenege big george chuvalo at all in my opinion and i've watched chuvalo fights from 1959 now you know my age
Jeffries, Mercer, McCall, V Kltischko, and Cobb had great chins. Chavlao was tough, but it is a fluke that he was stopped twice rather quickly by the best two punchers he fought? Maybe A. Godoy belongs as he took many bombs from Joe Louis.
