at heavyweight chuvalo has set the stanard for chins i think most seasoned fight fans will admit that.oliver mc call is close but mercer and cobb they are at a lower level indeed chuvalo told me some time ago all fighters are tough and all fighters hit hard but afew just hit a lil harder then most do.its the same for chins a few fighters got better then average chins then you got fighters like chuvalo.i chat with fight fans older than i am,who have seen joe louis, and others from those eras fight most tell me nobody had a chin like chuvalo did,all he need was the proper training when he was younger which he never got.most guys on this site don't know that in 1956 chuvalo knocked out 4 fighters in 1 night
Let me clearify that I am not claiming Mercer or Cobb to have more durable chins than Chuvalo... Only comparable. If it is indeed the opinion of " oldtime fight fans ", that two men who survived the combined artillary of Earnie Shavers, Ken Norton, Tim Witherspoon, Tommy Morrison, Bert Cooper and Lennox Lewis are not among the elite chins, then I guess nothing I say on a chat forum is going to change that... Good day to you sir.
let me ask you this,50 years from now whos going to remember tex cobb?chuvalo will be talked about hes had 93 fights man 97 if you listen to george.those other 4 are the 4 fighters chuvalo ko'd in 1 night in 1956
Well, the highlights of his career took place nearly 30 years ago, and I'm talking about him right now. If I am still living in 50 years at the age of 84, then I will likely still mention his name. I'm well aware of how many fights chuvalo had, who he fought, and what the outcomes were. I don't have a problem with people claiming that he had the most proven chin of all time. But, to dismiss Mercer, Cobb and McCall as not even being close, isn't a reasonable argument by anyone's standards. Its sort of like saying that the list of all time hard hitters looks like this 1. Shavers 2. Foreman 3. Tyson 4. Louis - - - 53. Liston. Get my drift?
Saw Chuvalo on ESPN Classic a while back & he is no worse for wear for the punishment he endured. I really for a minute thought he was a sports writer/analyst & that the guy could have been mistaken for a college lecturer he was so well spoken. He & Archie Moore were both incredibly articlate in their old age. Don't know if anyone 'surpasses' ,but the few with comparable chins have been mentioned.
nobody is dismissing them man,i've seen both them fight as well.read what these last 2 posts have to say by a couple other guys too.
When you are older what you can do is analyze things by knowing the form of the other guy going into the fights. Me, I'm not old enough to know the form of the opposition until the late 60's or so. I guess it's kind of like having a view of things thru the windshield as opposed to a view of the rearview mirror. But like I mentioned earlier, just look at those alltime finishers Chuvalo faced and he was in rough shape and badly outboxed in those 4 fights. If you even get a bad cut against those guys the bout is all over and guys just don't slip thru the cracks. I don't see a Cobb or Mercer or McCall even remaining on their feet when a Foreman/Frazier/Ali is the opponent putting their foot on the gaspedal. And I can't think of many guys that would've absorbed all those sharp clean punches from Ali round after round. It's one thing to do it early, but Chuvalo could somehow absorb in the 12th round even. I think the absorption factor could catch up to those other good chin guys late. I just rewatched Wlad Klitschko--Mercer a few days ago. Man, Mercer took some big shots and that was when Sdunek had Wlad and he was a far more aggressive guy than the Steward version. Mercer definately had a set of whiskers in there and could hang in that pocket. He took a ton of hard shots in there and was absorbing a tough shot about every 25 seconds. But he did hit the deck in the first round with a punch he never saw. I think George Chuvalo is the only guy that can absorb--and stay on his feet---from the big shots he doesn't see coming. I think the other strong beard types can hit the deck under that scenario but that really is going to take some doing.
and listen to chuvalo speak today, his words are clear and hes well spoken a lot of guys at 71 like him after taken those shorts are in bad shape,no very clearly chuvalo is 1 of a kind as far as taken heavy punches goes
