He fought Bob Hazleton on the Sonny Liston-Leotis Martin undercard in Vegas. That was George’s 11th fight. Mostly he main evented small cards in Oklahoma and Oakland and Houston and other off-the-beaten-path locales (as well as Madison Square Garden). He was outside the big limelight but was able to draw crowds in non-traditional venues due to his Olympic glory and the fact that he was knocking people into next week.
Pretty sure he was a main eventer all the way through there. Even on his comeback he fought a lot of small towns and headlined.
His debut was on the undercard for the first Joe Frazier versus Jerry Quarry fight in Madison Square Garden, that was pretty notable.
Do you know what the main event was for his fight with Chuvalo? And what were the undercards for his fights with Frazier, Norton, and Young?
This is pretty easy information to get on BoxRec. Go to Foreman's record, find, say, the Chuvalo fight, and click on "Event". While the order of the bouts might not be accurate, it's pretty easy to suss out what the main event was. I.E. Foreman-Chuvalo was the main event, and was a fairly big fight at the time.
Which Foreman bout? The fights you'd asked about didn't really feature much in the way of notable undercards, save for the Young fight when Alfredo Escalera defended his title. Holmes also fought on the undercard of Foreman-Young, but that wasn't televised from what I recall.
I just looked. Larry fought a guy named Horace Robinson, it's on youtube. I don't get too excited about Larry before Shavers I, tho
I'd forgotten there was a couple rounds of Holmes-Robinson on YouTube. Maybe it was televised, since Cosell is calling it. Holmes was wearing Foreman's colors. I mean, I was nine when I watched Foreman-Young live on TV, and I wasn't super-deep into boxing yet. I probably just don't remember watching the Holmes bout. And, yeah, Holmes came into his own against Shavers. I do remember watching the Holmes-Houpe (billed as "Young Sanford") bout on NBC's Night of the Heavyweights in prime time in September 1977.
You can also click on the date and scroll down (the cards are listed alphabetically by country, then city/state under each country, so Argentina is usually first and USA at the bottom. Also, on some cards during Foreman’s day the undercard might consist of amateur/Golden Gloves fights.
Unfortunately Larry didn't get chances against any notable opposition until Shavers. Ali won his first title in his 20th pro fight, Frazier had Bonavena in his 12th, and so on. Larry had to fight 28 nobodies before he got Shavers, maybe that's why Larry was so unbeatable when he finally got to fight the big names.
