I think Jose Roman is well up there with Crawford Grimsby in the top tier steaks and certainly a step up from Terry Sorrell, Joe Murphy Gordwin and Clarence Boone.
Wepner certainly was elite according to Glass city Cobra, whom also labled Eddie Machen a journeyman. It's been a great thread though.
George Foreman sure as hell knew Jose Roman was the real deal. That's why he hit him while he was down. He didn't want a beast like Roman getting up and roaring towards him with pure viciousness like a wounded animal. Roman got up anyway ! But Foreman was fortunate, and his cheap shot was a wise insurance move and probably took that little extra out of Roman to swing things Big George's way. Notice how Roman never got a rematch, despite the whole world calling for it. There's nothing quite like watching two equally matched top-tier heavyweights going at it like that.
He actually was. The Bayonne Bleeder was the man who retired Sonny Liston, thrashed Earnie Terrell, Schooled a green Foreman, forced Randy Neuman into referring and left Ali on the canvas... Of all the great wonders of the world, none are so magnificent as the almighty Chuck Wepner.
Well, if you put it like that. I see why Stallone had to under-state his Wepner-based Rocky character. If he'd portrayed Chuck's true life accomplishments even Hollywood would've felt it too unbelievable !!!
IMO, if you have Foreman rated inside the Top 6, that might be a little overrating him; but the thing is, most don't have him there, and have him even sometimes outside the top ten. That isn't being overrated to me.
Depends on your perspective. If you have the awsome Chuck Wepner down as an "elite" proposition of the championship scene and the unbeaten number one contender Eddie Machen portrayed as a down on his luck, thread bare journeyman when Ingo beat him then you could imagine Glass City Cobra making a one sided case. That would be the only way.
I cut and pasted the entire page which included earlier ATG listings. The idea is Goerge was not rated as an ATG until he beat Moorer. It's so amusing how the 2-3 who disagree are so lost and completely incorrect. At the same time it's a stark example how history can be so twisted over time by those who were either born after the time period or those who lived through it but are ignorant of the time period. This is why fighters like Johnson and Dempsey all time greatness is questioned today. No one is around to attest first hand.
