I find it very hard to see Foreman's record as being weak obviously the two wins over Frazier and the Moorer wins are the highlights but defeating Norton the way he did was impressive and the Lyle win was good and arguably Lyle was winning against Ali before he was knocked out and the losses to Young, Holyfield and Morrison are overratedm arguably Ali got a gift against Young and the Holyfield fight was a war which showed Forman was a real contender and Morrison ran from him all night. He also was robbed against Briggs, I don't think though there was anyway he would have defeated Lewis.
I have him in my top 10 but I have not done one in a while...I have quite a few changes to make...Foreman is closer to the bottom, a powefull man with a lot of flaws and padded record but his well timed victory over Frazier and Norton and Moorer and that fact that he did comeback with new found stamina and a relaxed style...I like the guy but I fear he would have had more losses if he were not so protected leading to the title
Amazon.com is fine. they prob have it on ebay too. Sorry Gpater i am going to get back to your PM on what i have for DVDs
His win over Chuvalo is also impressive, not that he won but the way he did, brutally knocking out a guy with one of the best chins ever. Some people dont like young foreman cause he might have looked sloppy but it was effective and he KOed many high quality guys. You dont beat fraizer and win a gold medal by being a mindless slugger like he is made out to be. If you look at the Chuvalo fight he had a nice body attack as well some nasty body shots in addition to the head shots which is what took him out of there. People also call him slow, which he was in his 40s but in the 70s although he wasnt fast he was probably average speed rather than being slow. He was highly effective, he just got off balance when he missed, which is a fault but people tend to underrate how effective he was because it sometimes didnt look pretty.
He's not top 10 for me. As have been stated, his record against ranked opposition is poor, and he especially looked bad against good boxers. I mean, he looks absolutely horrible against Young. Now Young would do that to many fighters and it could well be argued that George never was the same after Zaire, but the fact is he never looked good against a decent boxer.
Don't see how you can have him outside of it. Was a real force in two of the most stacked HW divisions ever, and it took fighters adopting extremely specific strategies to beat him. Really, Morrison, Ali and Young just boxed. No one ever outslugged Foreman. H2H if you're not a damned capable boxer you're going to catch hell from a prime Foreman.
Incredibly, i find myself agreeing with you except for the highlighted area (about being so special). I found that to be selective bargaining more than anything.
He is easily top 10. Resume alone isn't enough, dominance also needs to count. Ali went life and death with Frazier three times, Foreman annihilated him. Ali lost to Norton once and admitted after the 3rd fight that he had lost. Foreman blew Norton away. Foreman won most of his fights in his first career by freakish KO's, no funny decisions, no question who the better fighter was. Louis and Ali have more depth in their resume, but Foreman would never ever lose to Schmeling, Frazier, Norton.
I think his crowning moment was his off-the-canvass victory over Ron Lyle. I do rate him top 10. http://www.amazon.com/Joe-Gans-Biog...=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1241836336&sr=1-1
