If he didn't have a comeback, I'd rate him somewhere between 15-20 as a heavyweight, maybe even slightly lower.

As it stands, I would say he's a fringe contender for a top 10 spot.

 

He will fill one of my vacant spots between 5 and 10. Hard one to judge, first career wins (overwhelming wins in some cases) over Frazier x 2, Norton and Lyle and was 40-0 when he fought Ali tho there were multitudes of nobodies. 3 great wins, a fine one and an ok one. Then we have the comeback. Damn he's a hard case lol

 

He's currently # 13 on my list. An argument can be made for the boarderline/tail end of Top 10.

I'd put him higher on a head-to-head basis, though.

 

He's a certainty for top10, I wouldn't scoff at a top5 placement.

I have him at #8

He's certainly accomplished more than fighters like Jack Dempsey and better head to head.

 

I've had him as high as number 5. Can't make a case to rate him above

Holmes, Louis, Ali or Marciano...

 

Had him as high as #4 among my all-time heavies, currently occupies my #5 or #6 position, depending upon my mood.

 

I think Foreman should be placed anywhere from 6-10 in head to head and on ATG heavyweight lists. He is IMO overrated because of his comeback. He fought handpicked oppenents and he got an arguably lucky punch in to win the title, after getting pounded on all the way up to that point.

His power was an extremely effective weapon that few men could ever survive. No wade-in slugger like Frazier or Marciano could survive his horn-like blows. And he could cut the ring off frighteningly well on any fancy Dan.

Foreman could get you with several different bombs: the hook, the uppercut, a prodigious two-handed attack on stationary targets. His jab was a jolting blow and range finder. His mentality as champion was of such arrogant confidence that he simply imposed his will, beating men into submission well before his sturdy chin could be seriously tested. And his size measures up well in any era.

George Foreman was a monster and he knew it. It took the Greatest to dethrone him.
