Alright, but it seems silly to me to suggest they're that clearly apart.

I don't think they are Worlds Apart.. but I think one is clearly stronger than the other.

Foreman could not manhandle Ali ,would he be anymore successful with Jack? I don't think a wide swinging puncher like George has the recipe to beat Jack, unless he gets lucky

Interesting comments classic crew. Thanks. I've always been intrigued with Jack Johnson. He seemed like such an unbelievably powerful animal. In some respects physically, he seems like he could hang with Foreman in terms of physicality. Obviously not in terms of punching power. But the gritty way that both of these guys could fight would prove to result in a nasty nasty nasty "boxing" war. It would be like two grizzly bears fighting each other with Rocky music playing in the background!

On balance, I think that Foreman lands a big shot at some point, but I can see Johnson outpointing him. Foreman was awfully dumb in the ring in his prime and Johnson was extremely cunning, as well as obviously more skilled.

As for strength: a lot of grappling is not about raw strength, but about how its used. I suspect that Foreman was stronger than Ali in absolute terms, but Ali outgrappled him; in contrast, Ali found it hard to manhandle Bonavena and that resulted in an embarassingly poor performance from Ali shortly before one of his greatest performances. Put a 190 lb wrestler in with a 220 lb big strong guy and have them grapple; I know which one I'd put money on.

However, boxing is not grappling, and even Young nearly lost, despite a perfect performance, due to Foreman's power catching up with him in the 7th.

I love Jack Johnson but he doesn't use lateral movement, have a good enough jab or quick enough to keep George away and I really don't like Foreman

I don't know. Jefferies was one of the strongest heavyweight champions in history. He was rusty but Johnson still moved him wherever he wanted, whenever he wanted. Jack Johnson strength is probably one of his most overlooked attributes.

It would be competitive for a few rounds. I think Johnson had enough all around skills and defense to get past those early rounds and put some hurt on George by the mid rounds. Jack would be talking to him much like Ali. Draining confidence from Foreman as each round passed.

    Johnson TKO 9th.

Jeffries was an old farmer who hadn't sniffed a ring in 5 years, took no tune-ups and whose strength was overrated because he threw around a bunch of sawed off wharf scrubs and a couple of old light heavies... most of whom still lasted many, many rounds.

Johnson himself feasted on a collection of midgets but at least he had a dubious effort against Jim Johnson, a strong McVey and a couple others of correct size and strength. I don't know. If Hart can take the fight to Johnson, Foreman might just blast him out of the ring.

    Foreman KO7.

Yes Johnson toyed with guys. He was a pure boxer not a devastating destroyer. Ali let lesser fighters last the many rounds as well but when it came time to get down he took care of business.

Johnson would pummel Foreman. Pummel him into Submission! :scaredas:

George would bulldoze him, no way is Johnson going to win by catching Foreman's punches, clinching, uppercutting and pot shotting and if he tried that bum rush he occasionally pulled he'd get destroyed even quicker.

Foreman is being seriously underrated here in some respects he wasn't a purely physical specimen he had a lot of technique, was very adept in cornering his man with good footwork, shoving and hard jabs was also very accurate with his punches and had good hand speed something Ali commented on. I'd also wager he was more durable than Johnson.

Maybe someone can point out from the footage what parts indicated why Johnson would beat Foreman

 He was a badass mother****er, very strong but IMO too primitive and crude through no fault of his own. No shame in losing to Foreman tho.

Johnson put on 20lbs of muscle after the Hhart fight, its entirely possible he would be stronger and more resilient that he was in 1905, photos of them squaring up prior to the fight show Johnson to be slender and sinewy, in marked contrast to the 208lbs he carried into the ring against Jeffries.
Johnson claimed he dislocated his thumb against Hart,I dont know if it's true, but if it is it might explain why he did not close the show after skating the first ten rounds.
Johnson finished the fight unmarked, Hart looked like a walking raw hamburger.

The average weight of Johnson's challengers was superior to that of any champions up until the 1930's. The average height was 6' 1".

The few clever men that Foreman met embarrassed him.
His results against Peralta and Young do not inspire confidence against Johnson.

Foreman did not slip jabs, he attempted to block punches with his gloves , he was a sucker for straight punches, and ineffective inside , hence his pushing of opponents backwards so they would be on the end of his wild swings.

Foreman was very good at closing down the ring, and a brutal hitter when he connected , how successful he would be at landing that power on Jack is a moot point.

Prime Foreman had no idea about pacing himself, usually, if he did not get you early he began to wind down like a clockwork toy . George was raw power personified, but power is only an asset if it is landing.

Foreman wasn't a 160 pound white guy like most of the other fighters Jack Johnson fought. If Jack made it out of 1 round it would be the biggest shock in sports history.
