What was the point of that slaughter? Was it an excuse to give Foreman free money that technically wasn't free? I can see how Fraizer or Norton would reasonably be expected to beat Foreman, but did what did Roman ever show to lead any reasonable person to believe he could beat Foreman?
Jose "King" Roman, 44-7-1, was coming off a victory over Terry Daniels, who Joe Frazier had destroyed a year earlier. So George maybe thought Roman was at Frazier level too. LOL. In reality, Foreman blatantly hit Roman while Jose was on the floor, and Foreman could have been "disqualified" for it. So "The King" would have been The Champ. Next up.....Ali vs The King.....in the "Rumble in the Jungle".
Should have been called either a no contest or disqualification for hitting Roman when Roman was down. Roman never recovered from that punch. BTW Roman weighed 195 pounds. That's a cruiserweight todayWhich means that Foreman had 24 pounds on him at 219.. Sorry but I don't consider winning by cheating winning.
If Ali was smart he would've have made his retirement effective immediately, faked his death and started a new life abroad as a pizza delivery man. I know those are drastic measures to avoid another fighter....but this is Jose Roman we're talking about!
Let's be honest....would it really have mattered??? Its not as if if not for that one punch, Roman would have gotten off the canvas and pulled a Buster Douglas. We've seen quick knockouts before, like Tyson/Spinks, Liston/Patterson, Lewis/Golota but Patterson, Spinks and Golota had relatively realistic chances at victory compared to Roman who's chance at victory was very far fetched in the extreme.
No one is claiming that Roman was a great fighter. His record: 53 Wins (27 knockouts, 26 decisions), 27 Losses (11 knockouts, 16 decisions), 4 Draws, 1 No Contest [1] is indicative of that he wasn't. So since he wasn't a great fighter then there should have been no necessity to hit him when he was down-right?
I think it was more accidental as Foreman was just caught up in the spirit at the moment and swinging away.
Spirit of the moment? Roman was sitting on his but when Foreman unloaded. He was also hitting Roman behind the head. Furthermore, that wasn't how the press saw it. They saw it as Foreman being angry because of something that Roman had said prior to the fight. Furthermore, when Roman was on one knee, the film clearly shows Foreman being aware of it by pausing momentarily before delivering a savage hook to the head. Of course had Roman done it to Foreman, then it would have definitely incurred an immediate disqualification. This content is protected Commentators barely mentioned it of course. To add insult to injury the Philadelphia press then said that the USA had sent garbage to Tokyo referring to Roman as if Roman was at fault for getting savaged while he was down.
The bout was a soft touch between major bouts. Boxing history 101. There was no issue concerning the punch while Roman was on the canvas. No controversy whatsoever.
Unfortunately, refs rarely care about a guy getting hit when he's down, unless he gets hurt or pretends he gets hurt. This content is protected
