George Foreman Vs Rocky Maricano

atsch I have a old boxing magazine from 1964 with Ali/Clay on the front of it with a caption saying "Clay: Can he really fight" - the vast majority of the experts quoted in the article said he was all hype and bluster and was pretty much nothing as a fighter - the fact that experts of any given fighters day don't rate him that higly means pretty much zilch - it's been the same throughout history - and no short armed brawler is going to impress everyone - following on from the perfect fighting machine that was Joe Louis - Jack Dempsey was generally considered the greatest champion in history up until the 60's or 70's yet in his day he was just some war slacker who wouldn't hold a torch to the old warhorses like Jeffries and Fitz - in Muhammad Ali's prime - everyone was saying that Joe Louis would've spanked this loudmouth kid - Lennox was the victim of never receiving his dues while in his career - it was only after he was gone that people really realised how great he was - people feared for Jack Dempsey's life before he fought Willard how wrong can you be?? Most people of the time thought George Foreman would anihilate Muhammad Ali in 2 rounds - Max Baer-Jim Braddock was considered a laughable mismatch - people thought Louis would simply crush little Billy Conn - Liston was unbeatable and was going to crush this kid Clay like an ant - press men and so called experts are routinely wrong Holyfield was going to be permanently retired by Mike Tyson - John Ruiz would be far to strong for pip-squeak Roy Jones - the fact that 'experts' of the day didn't rate Rocky much carries very little weight with me at all :-(

Marciano was much more static than Ali and Jimmy Young??

Why don't you go watch Ali-Foreman and Young-Foreman and see how they beat him - neither moved very much at all both were pretty much in range for most of the fight - both simply made him miss and used feints to confuse him and out time him when he was doing that dumb drunken state waving his hands around in front of him thing and popping him between his wide open gloves when he was doing it - in fact I'd go as far to say that in their fights with Foreman both Ali and Young were probably more static than Marciano as a rule.

George took harder punches from the usual suspects??

In the first Frazier-Foreman fight, George probably got hit with maybe two decent hooks but neither had that much steam in them and they got Foreman's attention.

Norton barely touched Foreman he was so scared!!

Lyle had George absolutely gone - completely gone - and Lyle was not an all time great puncher.

Morrison ran and stuck and moved and beat Foreman - do you think Morrison could've stick and moved and won against ANYONE ELSE IN THE WORLD??? That just shows you how limited George was at that time aswell - Tommy Morrison doing a twinkle toes with anyone?? He couldn't have done that (and won) with anyone else in the world rankings at the time !!

Briggs?? Fair enough but he was no great shakes really was he?? Don't even compare him with Marciano as a puncher!!

You say Marciano was knocked down by Walcott as though it is a criticism?? Walcott was a great puncher - one who had Joe Louis on quiz street and one of the very few to knock Ez Charles spark out - with one punch!! He hit Marciano with one of his best left hooks and Marciano wasn't even hurt and was up at about 3?? and you say Walcott was past his prime?? Well Walcott himself said he fought his best fight ever against Marciano so go figure

Bonavena is now an all time great puncher is he - when did that become part of boxing folklore??

Bert Cooper nearly put Holyfield down - yeah and prior to the first Bowe fight what was the big knock on Holyfield?? That he couldn't take a heavyweight punch

Put my money on Foreman!! Marcaino would be tailor made for Foreman. Marciano takes to much leather early in fights and early leather to your skull is Foremans specialty!! I see Foreman knocking Marciano down and out for good in the 4th round, the Rock is as tough as they come but George has to much for him.

 

i see it for foreman myself but there's such an argument to be made for rocky...getting inside those long arms, ravaging the body (sounded filthy...) and grinding george down is entirely possible.

all depends, for me anyway, is how strong on the inside rocky is. if george can push him back as easily as he did frazier, it's gonna be a painful night for marciano

 

George had power but he fought like a god damn ape and was a sucker for a lead right hand. George had 2 great wins but had a break down and retired as a young man having fought just 5 elite fighters.

Rocky had a great lead right, consistantly over acheived against ATG's, was tougher than peralta and was never knocked out.

marciano was not joe frazier.
