I read the same book. Joe grew up in Wales yes, but English was not the first language of his father. Joe was sent to live with his grandparents in Sardinia for a while as a kid. For a while he Spoke the language and lived with them as an Italian. If that makes him 100% Welsh then that is up to you. This is not a traditionally Welsh set up. The place where you are born is just the place where you are Born. sometimes cats are born in cow sheds. So what?

Joe comes from an Italian family. The Surname is passed onto his children. He was raised mostly in Wales and his mother might be Welsh but his father's family will always be Italian. Being born in Hammersmith will not effect his ethnicity or how he was raised.

 

By your reckoning there is no such thing as an American, save for Native Americans, because they all have European ( both Eastern, and Western ) African, Asian, or Hispanic ancestory.

Furthermore how do we know that English was even the first language of his mother? She might well be able to speak Welsh, and those that do consider it to be their first language.

Frankly I don't give a **** what anyone else thinks he is. I'll take HIS word for it that he is Welsh.
