Tyson never beat a fighter as good as a prime Riddick Bowe. Larry Holmes was five years past his prime when he fought him. Tyson also didn't win the title four times, not to mention Holy won the last past the age of 38. What did Tyson do past the age of...gee, 33? Holy even gave Lewis a run for his money...five years past his prime. Tyson...well, oh dear.
Big George kinda into those silly games he plays now and then. I'm surprised that he didn't have Jerry Quarry in the top 5.
My guess is Tyson's in ring, post fight interview with Larry Merchant. EDIT: Watch Bill Cayton's face light up after Mike said this... This content is protected
Mike knew the deal. I do think Mike would have given a significantly better (much more peril fraught) but not entirely dissimilar fight against Holmes than Mike Weaver did. Weaver had the power of Tyson but wasn't anywhere near the crazy pressure fighter Mike was in his prime, and not as fast. I think the Larry who beat Ali would have gotten knocked down in the middle rounds, then roared back (as he always did in his prime). The jab and uppercut would have had Iron Mike falling all over the ring worse than Holy and Douglas did. 10 rounds in it gets stopped...that's if Larry doesn't have that horrible flu he did against Weaver lol! I realize this isn't an entirely popular view. But as people have noticed about Mike's other ko victims, too many folks tend to base his opponents on their loss to Mike (such as Berbick, who was actually a very good fighter). Larry was the dominant heavyweight of the 80s, only a blind person couldn't see that. Mike was sensationally dominant...but only for under three years in the decade. Besides Mike, there was noone spectacularly better than Holmes at any time during the 80s imo. And I believe LH's very past prime, successful TKOs of David Bey and Smith proved that, for just two examples. All that said YES folks, Larry is my favorite fighter, so take what I say with a boulder of salt lol.
Looks like a fairly boring, play-it-safe list with no real surprises. Have no idea on his criteria though.
So what? Max Schmeling's win over Louis is better than any single win of Holmes, Liston, or Marciano, it doesn't mean he's better And what was he like when Holyfield failed to stop him? He wouldn't have won it so many times if the titles weren't split up, and if he didn't keep losing He was also stopped by a 35 year old fat middleweight.
I do so love riling up the Tyson sycophants...interesting how many of them seem to be adamantly against Holmes. They're actually a bit like the Marciano sycophants...won't accept schooling, it just has to be their fighter reigning even through absolutely irrational and erroneous assertions.
George says the most random, ridiculous **** sometimes for shits and giggles. I liked him as a commentator for his charisma only, cause he said the dumbest stuff that didn't make sense and thought that it shouldn't be challenged because he boxed.
