Hello, Found this interesting some of the names surprised me. Also very humble of big George to not include himself in the top ten. Here is Big George's opinions on the top ten greatest HW Champions. As well as his comments for each. 10. Evander Holyfield, "For standing up to Mike Tyson." 9. Floyd Patterson, "The first two time HW Champion." 8. Sonny Liston, "If Sonny Liston truly had not list his cool, had not underestimated a young Cassius Clay, and kept the same mindset that he had as a contender, history would have been a lot kinder to him. Sonny Liston could not believe Muhammad Ali was so fast and had so much courage. It just made him fall apart." 7. Mike Tyson, "What Mike Tyson was able to do with his speed of hand and punching power was as phenomenal as what Muhammad Ali did when he was Cassius Clay with the speed of his feet. Tyson deserves to be int the top 10; the youngest man to become HW champion of the world. 6. Jack Dempsey, "Dempsey's very name means strength and courage. Other than Joe Louis, there is not a name in boxing , or in sports, with more meaning. 5. Joe Frazier, "Only because he depended solely on his left hook do I rate Frazier below Marciano. Marciano could hit with both hands. 4. Muhammad Ali, "Put him down as Greatest Man to ever box, and a hero bigger than boxing. Once Ali lost his speed, it only showed that he'd never developed a great defense." 3. Jack Johnson, "A big brave cat, because he'd do whatever he wanted and get out of the way." 2. Rocky Marciano, Just look at Rocky Marciano's record. NObody beat him. You can't take that from him. 1. Joe Louis, "No one is even close . Louis was in a class by himself." From George Foreman's website: http://www.georgeforeman.com/ring-greatest-heavyweights Foreman's website also has his top ten greatest champions from all the divisions if any of you have any interest in that.
Foreman tends to say what he thinks his audience want him to hear. For example if he visits Britain, he talks up the British prospects.
Foreman still thinks that Ali had him doped at Zaire. He backs away from the claim, but always returns to it.
It might be sincere, since this list has several features I'd expect from Foreman: * It ranks his opponents well. * It fits Foreman's own formative period. The list is generous to people from his own era (including friends, like Liston), and from the preceding era that occurred when he was growing up (Patterson, Marciano), along with a couple consensus fighters most people talked about as being "great" during Foreman's prime (Louis, Dempsey, Johnson). * It takes a swipe at Ali. This relatively low ranking would not be a popular opinion that most of his listeners would have wanted to hear from him. * It heavily favors punchers like George himself. In Patterson's case, it's also a puncher who did the same thing Foreman did --regaining the HW championship.
It should also be noted, that he is a big Joe Louis fan. Even when he was champion, he was mealy mouthed in Louis’s presence, and treasured any s****s of praise the Louis threw his way.
