I think Godfrey was a bit past his best in the 30's,he had added 20lbs to his frame,and his day was really past imo. Prime for prime, as has been said,it would depend on what version of Max turned up. Godfrey is extremely difficult to assess accurately ,it's believed he had the cuffs on for some of his fights with white opponents.
I cannot really determine in which, if any, fights George Godfrey had the cuffs on, so I cannot really factor that in. I will go with the more proven wins against high level competition and go with Max Baer in this hypothetical matchup. With the styles of both, I would expect a great fight to watch with a knockout win by Max Baer.
Nope, but someone ought to dissent and give fella the benefit of doubt instead of always using it against him. We don't get to know how good the colorline fellas really were on either side of that situation. Don't let that stop you from placing whites on top by resume though. Get me?
