In former times, before alphabet belts, Groves would probably have ended up as a European level boxer. Now he'll probably manage to get one of the world titles. He's a decent, skillful fighter, with heart, who doesn't have the punch power or defense to be at top world level. Just like James De Gale !
There is still alot of work for groves to do. the reason booth feeds him constant info is because groves will switch off and just start to brawl and forget about his boxing/movement/defence. I think he will make world title level would like to see him in with Allan Green next who is competitive enough for a few rounds and will throw punches and come forward.
Groves has the power to stop most people at 168. Froch and Kessler won't be around for long and groves is 1 of the new batch coming through at 168. Ward may move up in a year or so, so Groves is likely to become a world champion soon. Degale is a very good boxer, but he needs a new trainer. Degale is someone else that can become a world champ. I think both these guys will beat the majority of 168lbers. I even think Degale would give Ward a good fight in about a year or so.
Groves needs to seriously do something about that defence, Its one thing fighting with your hands by your side against retired fighters making a comeback but I dont think he has the speed to get away with that at world level and he's hardly the quickest smw out there. Good to get 12 rounds under the belt but a man of his supposed ambition should not be in fights with opponents like that. The fightwent the way most thought it would.
I rate groves but ive also noticed he wobbles and is easily put off balance. he might have weak legs! He punches hard but he's not very physically strong.
What I like is that George was in exactly the same situation Tyson Fury was in the other week, and George went for it throwing a huge rally. He may never be the best british Middleweight but he's good entertainment.
I was more impressed with Groves than I have been in any other fight. The fight against DeGale for example, he basically ran around the ring and threw crap quality combinations, that isn't boxing of any substance IMO. Then against Anderson he looked exciting offensively but flawed defensively and under pressure as well as getting hurt. But last night I liked his grit, I liked the fact he said 'this guy is old, can't pull the trigger and is no real threat' and really put it on him in bursts. More than anybody has done against Glen. That's what I wanted to see, what I was dreading seeing was another DeGale performance against an old man that has no real business in there anymore, just stealing the fight. It was a convincing display.
Very good and entertaining fighting. Sure he has his flaws but in reality hes a novice of what 16 fights, he can only improve.
