Has enough power at 168 to keep his opponent honest enough but seems to not plant his feet as much now under Shane McGuigan.
Murray claimed that GGG had better power in most of his shots but when Groves set down on a power shot his single punch power exceeded GGG's. Once again proving that single shot power is mostly overrated at the highest level.
Yep this. He literally walked straight into that shot, he couldn't of hit Froch any sweeter, it's similar to the shot that JMM dropped Pac with or Cunningham dropped Fury with, walking into like that amplified the power and effect of that shot. Groves is obviously a big puncher but he isn't one of the exceptional puncher types that come along and scare everyone. Like Kovalev, Golovkin, McClellan, Benn, Jackson etc. I'd say Groves is an 8/10 on the power scale.
Why does that prove anything? GGG needed the ref to stop Murray to protect his KO streak, and that was a Murray claiming to be drained to corpse levels too. Groves wasn't winging in his hardest shots with every punch, even though Murray was a punch bag, Groves was more calculated.
Groves has very good power, enough to keep anyone honest at SMW and enough to knock most guys out. I'd say 7.5/10. We shouldn't mythicise that punch against Froch though. That's a once-in-a-career kind of punch where the stars align and it couldn't land much better. If you're waiting for another one of those from him you could be waiting a long time.
Groves' power is decent, but nothing special. He looks and searches for opportunities, then sets up a punch, similarly to how Wlad did against AJ. Therefore, you could argue that his power isn't as great as people say, simply because he looks for power punches rather than letting them come along naturally.
If Groves was more calculated the fight wouldn't have been as close as it was. GGG/Murray was one sided after the first couple rounds.
I feel Froch still had a lot too give even at that age, he was a late starter in boxing, i think it was more of a combination of the perfect shot and complacency on Frochs part
