Hayemaker prospect George Groves will take a step up in class when he faces Paul Samuels in his third professional fight. Groves took the unusual step of fighting six-rounders from the inception of his professional career, going the distance on the undercard of David Haye-Monte Barrett and then stopping Frenchman Romaric Hignard in three rounds last year. Samuels represents a definite step up in class having previously challenged for the British light middleweight title and IBO middleweight crown, but Groves' promoter Adam Booth is certain he is capable of rising to the challenge. "We had the Latvian as a reserve while I was looking at what George was doing at a regular basis," Booth told Steve Bunce's Boxing Hour. "After seeing him spar with Carl Froch and how he handled himself I decided this was the right move. "I know sparring’s sparring, but I’ve seen enough in George that if he’s going to keep fighting guys at a low level it will kill his ambition. "George Groves is too good for that to happen." Booth added that in David Haye's professional career which saw him lose to Carl Thompson in his 11th fight, he got stale fighting lesser opposition which led to him getting careless in the ring and he wants to avoid this happening to Groves. "David Haye and I have sat down and made a calculation," Booth went on. "The way to bridge [the class] gap is travelling and paying. I’ve spoke to Golden Boy about George going over and getting exposure in America. "If you look at David’s seventh fight when he was knocked down by Lolenga Mock it was because he wasn’t used to being in a fight. "We don’t want that to happen to George." ----------------------------- Not bad for a 3rd fight.
When the name was first mentioned this afternoon I was quite shocked (so was Bunce by the way his voice went up a couple of octaves) but having looked up what Samuals has been up to over the last few years it seems a decent, but safe enough, fight for Groves.
really looking forward to this card now. Samuels is the sort of guy Warren would put DeGale in with in 10 fights time.
Very good for a third fight...... nice to see promoters actually taking risks (of sorts) and actually putting their guys in with an opponent capable of dressing himself.
Good to see, when a promoter and management team have confidence in a fighter this is what they should do, just hope the kid isnt pushed to quick.
agreed, he looked pretty special. he has that cold, calculated way about him. big things lie ahead for george i reckon.
I like Haye/Booth's approach. They ain't gonna be picking up guys and getting them to 30 - 0 against 30 bums, seems like they'll get their fighters to take the Haye route and take risks.
Jesus George looked great last night, Hurt Samuel's with everything he threw. Ref stopped it a bit soon, but he was only preventing the inevitable. What's next for Groves?
