George Groves vs Andre Ward

Discussion in 'British Boxing Forum' started by Phill-Mitchell, Sep 11, 2012.

  1. How do you think Groves would do?

And before you go "ward schools him" or whatever, have a think about it for a minute.

Andre Ward STILL has not fought a guy who moves his feet at the top level, most of his opponents have already been blueprinted and lost fights, and are predictable in what they bring.

I believe Groves would have the best handspeed and movement that ward has faced, and would also be able to deliver his power shots with greater success than say a short, slow slugger like Abraham, a slow guy full stop like froch, a straight lines, set your watch predictable Kessler or a weight drained Chad Dawson (who DID land a fair bit before mentally quitting).

Groves is unbeaten and produces his best under adversity, we also don't know his level yet, (remember ward himself was written off as "too green" and "average" before the super 6)

I'm not saying groves would win, but maybe he'd have a chance to do ok?

  2. Nice well thought out response...

I think he'd do himself proud. Can't see him lasting the distance but I think he'd definitely land something and when Groves does fighters know about it. Trouble is, Andre Ward's head versus someone with thin skin like George... oh dear. Froch's warnings made Ward behave in their fight but Ward was at it again against Dawson. Maybe he has an itch on his forehead.

He would get stopped because he is crazy open and makes so many fundamental errors. but might cause a bit of trouble because he is strong and erratic a bit like Bika.

George did beat DeGale IMO but only just and he struggled to land anything meaningful most of the time, Ward is certainly better then DeGale defensively and has a sharper offence. At the moment it's not even close as Groves is far too open, maybe if he keeps developing and picks up a world title, its possibly a fight in a few years.

Gets stopped in middle rounds, Far to open as Rob says and he wouldn't be able to get out of the way of Ward's onslaughts. I haven't seen Groves inside game but i think he'd get ravaged there as well.

Ward's a sharp puncher, times his shots well. Groves doesn't see punches coming unless he fights in a negative manner and he wouldn't win the fight off the back foot. I think his power is good at a level but likes of Ward would have faced stronger and harder shots.

    Ward TKO7.

And as for movement, Groves has a wide stance and uses massive telegraphed steps. It's not a strength when fighting Ward.

Ward would just get on the inside and take George apart.

  12. Getting on the inside is easier said than done though because groves can punch

Yeah as others have said Groves is too open and is in serious trouble when he faces an accurate puncher. BUT he is only a prospect and he can certainly work on some of the technical flaws he clearly has. I like Groves and definitely think he could pick up a strap in the future but I'd much rather he carried on with thegradual progression his career's taken thus far.

If the OP thinks a Groves-Ward fight now is a good idea, he's off his head. It's a terrible fight with George being nowhere near ready for Ward.

He doesn't have to get on the inside to win. He'd destroy him from the outside too presently.

  15. no it wouldnt be a good fight yet he needs to deal with Kenny Anderson first then box someone like Abraham or Stieglitz or even beat degale more convincly to even consider going anywhere near wards calibre
