If Hayemaker have any sense they would line up Paul David as the opponent and double it as a British title eliminator.
That doesn't seem to be official, but if it is good luck to DeGale. They've stepped him up quick. Which they do kinda have an onus on them to do, DeGale being a gold medalist, people expect to see him move fast. Doesn't mean this is a bad fight for a man with 10 fights. Especially since it seems they were supposed to be fighting Anderson.
Warren offered the fight on September 18th to Anderson, Quigley, McGuire, Dodson, David and Mendy and they all turned it down. Dilks was the next best option. It wouldnt be a bad fight if they hadnt promised more.
The only promise I saw for this fight was that it would be a very good undefeated opponent. Which presumably, was meant to be Anderson. Nobody knows exactly why that didn't happen yet, Anderson must have turned it down at the last moment. The only thing I criticize them for is the naivety to actually announce something like that before it was signed and sealed. This is boxing, anything can happen.
If DeGale is fighting Smith then both he and Groves are moving at a fast pace. Something we don't really see with British boxers. Toney is a good opponent for Groves at this stage. If Groves gets the stoppage quicker than Bute and/or Karmazin did then that will look good. If not at least he'll get some rounds under his belt. We need to chill out with the Groves/DeGale talk. If they both keep progressing like this we could still see it happen in 12/18 months.
Toney would be a great opponent but bear in mind the Bute and Karmazin losses were 4 years ago, so don't put too much stock in a win quicker than they managed
Which they might have been if it was Kenny Anderson, though I think they would have been wrong based on what I've seen of that guy. As I said, they were naive to talk about things like that before it was signed, sealed and delivered. They should learn from things like that as fairly new promoters.
looking at toney....he is actually not a bad opponent at all. still disappointed as the DeGale fight was put on a plate for him.
Nowt wrong with this guy he's mixed in good class (has a draw with Randy Griffin who drew with Felix Sturm). The De Gale fight needs to be for the British title, If chunky gets the belt off Smith I reckon Groves will take the fight on a Warren show.
Not being funny, but this Toney fella hasn't beaten anyone with a pulse. Lost to 3 decent fighters, but his "best" win is against a dude with a 10-2-0 record. Unimpressed.
