Hearing very good things about this guy, probably the best non olympian prospect out there at the moment along with stephen smith (my opinion) what do you guys think?
I like what I've seen of him thus far. I think Degale is wrong to say he's not in the same league as him, Sutherland and Jefferies.
looks good but he needs to keep busy.a few more of those afternoon shows at york hall would be good until hayemaker get a tv deal
I like him but I wish he'd fix that left hand before moves up in class. Maybe he's only doing it at the moment because he knows he can get away with it and its drawing leads...?
People said the same thing about Carl Froch, Gaz. Infact, anytime a fighter comes along with low hands everybody calls for them to "keep their hands up". It never happens. Just like every footballer needs to "bulk up"
This constant criticism of fighters for keeping their hands low is really short-sighted. Granted, it does cause some defensive vulnerability but the trade-off is a quicker attack.
Tommy Hearns, Mike McCallum and others used to do well with it as well. It works for some fighters but not others but its a cold day in Hell when Carl Froch gets held up as an example of how a young pro should box....;O) If thats his natural style and he thinks he can make it work then fine but if he's just picked it up from sparing Froch and hanging around Haye in the gym then it could be bad news down the line.
I understand the pros and cons of keeping the left hand low (thanks!!), but if anyone is being short-sighted its people who assume he'll be still be able to get away with it when he moves up in class. A low left hand does work well for a lot of boxers (esp. ones with good handspeed) but just as many (if not more) come unstuck using it when they start facing guys who know what they're doing.
:goodHe's been brilliant thus far and not having the hypetrain around him that the others have had to deal with is a very good thing, IMO. Jeffries, Sutherland, De Gale et al are being built up to such an extent that anything other than a world title will, strangely, be looked upon as a failure. Contrast that to the way Groves' fledgling career has progressed thus far, and the standard of opposition that he has faced, and I personally think that he's got the best deal out of all of them. We shall see...
Groves is a fantastic prospect yep. He's the one who i think can really deliver some exciting fights. His style will make for some cracking fights. It's a lot like Haye. And he has a similar level of power relative to his weight. I find him by far the best to watch of the recent crop though they all have their own qualities. I've favorited some of his pro fight videos on my youtube channel: http://www.youtube.com/user/GrovesVDeGale I've also favorited the amateur match between him and Degale which he won. Its extremely close and I really hope these two can win their first 10-15 fights and build up some hype over a potential pro fight cos that would be fantastic! cheers
Good point. Flying under the radar the way he currently is can only be a good thing long term. Without having every fight and match-up scrutinised. He won't suffer from it either as all he has to do to grab people's imagination is take one of the Olympian's scalps. I'm not entirely sure that's the way he wants it however as he has been talking a good fight in the media, and giving DeGale in particular plenty of stick.
