Far worse than that for me. Actually had a go unlike Catterall. Hughes won rounds clearly whereas a lot in the Taylor v Catterall fight were very close. Just my opinion of course.
Maxi would have been better off taking lower money on A side fights and keeping the wins going against the likes of JoJo Diaz or ticking over on ranking fights until titles vacate with Haney. Held off for 6 months and that fights is likely for a vacant title or madatory atleast
Punch stats suggest otherwise. 120 for Catterall and 73 for Taylor. 98 to Hughes and 90 to Kambosos. Catterall also scored a knockdown. But don't let facts get in the way of your feelings, man.
Agree to an extent but there was no guarantee Haney would vacate a few months ago and from what I know of Maxi he’s packed in work to try and earn as much money as possible for a few years. He backed himself and you can’t knock him for that. What’s his situation with Matchroom? Did he just have this fight as a 1 fight deal or has he left permanently?
It does leave a bit of a sour taste, especially as it was on a Top Rank card which are the majority of the ones in the US that I go to. I know we spoke about watching fights overseas before and I think I’m going cut them back a bit now. The only one I will definitely go to if it is made later on this year is Loma v Stevenson. First week of December and in NY would be ideal, let’s hope it happens.
Don’t let them ruin it for you mate Top Rank have had quite a few questionable scorecards in the last 12-18 months though I do agree.
We all know that boxing is full of robberies but this one hits harder than most due to the circumstances. This wasn't two big buck millionaire fighters going at it and one getting slightly done on the cards. The Maxi Hughes story is worthy of a film, shades of Micky Ward in the fighter at times. The way Hughes has carved out a professional career for himself, come through in the face of adversity and fought his way into a position where he was a fight away from a World title shot, it was absolutely brilliant to watch and he boxed brilliantly last night against a former unified World Champion, the man who took the 0 of Teo Lopez, it deserves far more than getting stitched on the cards. The way that boxing works and moves, the age of Hughes, that's probably it for him now at that level, he'll probably never get another chance. It's all wrong.
Agreed. He was right to try and take the money as it a good payday and he knows he’s 33. Was on a fight by fight with Options for Matchroom. Matchroom tried to make the Ryan Garcia and Linares fights but couldn’t get them over the line and then the division domestically is very weak. Haney was always vacating within this year as he’s really been struggling at the weight for years. Only fight he would stay at 135 for currently is Tank. If he wants to keep going he’s likely going to be an away fighter against the likes of Zepeda or Keyshawn Davis or maybe he’s now a big enough name for Garcia comeback fight while he waits for Rolly vs OD winner. Hope he gets another payday as he was jobbed badly at the weekend. If I was him I would try to get the rematch
Well said. When he took the Jono Carroll fight in 2020 he wasn't even training and had practically given up with boxing but desperately needed the money as he had a young family and no money coming in due to being self-employed. After a few more wins he chanced his arm, quit work and gave boxing one last go. The fights he would have got had he been given the decision at the weekend could have set him up for life. Heart breaking for the lad.
offered him that as it was the highest money fight they had for him available. To be honest it was practically the only fight available that would pay him that level. Hence why both parties were happy to part ways.
