You don't think there was a bias for the Hometown hero? EVERYONE outside it had Douglas winning whether it was 8-2 by multiple guys, 7-3 by JOE LOUIS and 7-2-1 by the ref. How many sources outside the local press can you cite having Jones won??? Don't you dare quote Marciano, the man was finically backing Jones since the early days.

Suffice to say, if a juggernaut such as George “Tire Iron” Jones didn’t exist, it would’ve been necessary for boxing fans to invent him. I’m very glad that he is for real.

PS - was Jones’ fight vs Chuck “Bleeding Brakes” Wepner ever officially confirmed? Apparently Chucky required multiple transfusions after the fight. Nasty stuff.

It allegedly happened during an entertainment/sparring type tour Wepner did at the Colorado State Penitentiary, but I've never found any confirmation, unfortunately. Still, it's a great story, and if it isn't true, it should have been.

That's all very well, but I heard from an anonymous poster on this forum who was an acquaintance of one of Jones's second cousin's friends' friends that the ref was bribed by the local policemen's union. So that settles that.

As for Louis, he is well-known as a primitive fighter who couldn't score a boxing match to save his life, since he lacked modern angles.

Don't make me pull out the big guns and have to start posting pictures of Jones in a cross-arm pose showing off his biceps.

Pfft, have you seen the size of Jackie "Big Wheels" Johnson's arms? Man had the bench record, raw for 15 years. That's longer then Louis's reign as champion, champions acknowledge champions and that's why Louis called Wheels "The greatest lost prospect he ever saw" according to someone I know who was friends with a guy who held pads for someone who fought out of a gym Joe visited one time.

Connected? I am AT the top, I once played and beat Lennox Lewis on chess.com. Honestly, easy nights work.

Before the match, did Lennox say “Bring it on maahn, you ain’t nutti’n’ to me!”

    Please tell me he did.

Maybe that’s how “chicken” Bowe can finally placate himself - beating Lennox in a game of chess?

What odds do we give Riddick - could he pull off a Buster Douglas as in Tokyo, or are we talking far more astronomical odds to overcome than that?

I could have sworn there was some footage of him that surfaced of his fight with Jackson "Night Train" Lane in the Garden back in '66. At first Tire Iron had a tough time getting though that poleax of a jab, but he made the adjustment in the sixth and ...boom! Cracked that chin. Night Train never fought again. He later said that he had nightmares for years of getting hit by that hook.

I remember reading about that fight, but I've never seen the footage. I always thought it was a shame that Night Train never fought again after that. He was a promising fighter and, as you say, that jab was like a telephone pole. Lane was better than London by that point, IMO, but hadn't shown up in the Ring rankings that year.

I think of that fight as the Tua/Ibeabuchi of the 60s. Lane was no joke. There's always the temptation to over-dramatize these things, but I agree with the majority that Jones's erratic behavior outside the ring took a marked turn for the worse after the ordeal with Lane. Neither fighter came out of that fight without issues.

OMG, I remember seeing that also!

One day the vision was up on You Tube and the next day…..GONE. I’m no conspiracy theorist but could there be a “push” to make pundits think that Tire Iron didn’t even actually exist, ala the efforts of those crazy, flat earthing, fake moon landing, Greb deniers?

Just as well there are those of us who are not so naive or easily fooled. No siree!

Also, HAT’s off to those who refrained from
using the verb “derailed” in reference to what Tire Iron did to Night Train - or even describing the latter’s career as having been permanently knocked off the “tracks”.

I mean, how obvious and banal would the employment of those literary devices have been?

Suffice to say, you are are better men than I, Gunga Dinnies.
