It's nearly here! I can't wait for this... might not provide 'fireworks' as such but is an intriguing styles match up... I really think if it turns into a grappling contest Shields can sub him in the mid rounds of the fight... Who know what will happen! What are your predictions? Here is a blog about the contest: http://www.mmayard.com/blog/mma-yard-news/georges-st-pierre-vs-jake-shields/
Not really a good styles match-up, it's a really well rounded fighter versus a really one dimensioanl fighter. GSP takes it easily if he is able to either control Shields against the cage or keep it standing.
Boring maybe, but I expect George to utilise his stand up in this one as Jakes no joke on the ground, think the Fitch fight Easy......... Im guessing you've only seen Shields v Kampann if you truly think that. GSP may make it look easy, but it will be anything but if Jake handles the cut better This wil be a chess match not a war, and I personally find it very intriguing. There's a few potential beat downs on the card for people with short attention spans. But Im looking forward to this one as well as Machida v Randy the most
if jake take it to the ground he would have the advantage but i think gsp will keep it standing but for Gods sake hope he doesnt jab all night long
GSP is going to pick him apart on the feet and score a takedown in the second 1/2 of every round. Win a decision. The only way this fight gets competitive and/or exciting is if Jake lands something big on their feet and takes a hurt GSP down. That's it. Shields is great on the ground, but GSP is better on the ground. That is the harsh reality for Shields.
There are all these guys saying that Shields is so much more superior on the ground compared to GSP. That may well be true, but I'd be laughing my butt off if GSP ends up submitting him in the later rounds. Who knows, maybe GSP will decide to jump in with the sharks and try to grapple with Shields. :scaredas:
A. You don't know that Shields would **** GSP up. Because like the "GSP vs Kos in straight wrestling", we don't know how good GSP is in straight grappling. B. Being able to manhandle and completely control Hughes, Fitch, Kos, Alves and BJ on the ground is a pretty good basis to say he is virtually unrivaled in the "ground department" in MMA. I hope I'm wrong, I really do. But GSP is a friggin beast! And just because he doesn't have a solid wrestling or grappling base, prior to starting MMA does not mean he hasn't surpassed these guys in grappling. It is actually ignorant and careless to say that Shields would **** GSP up in grappling until we actually see him do it, solely because from GSP's career since the Hughes loss there is absolutely not 1 moment that would suggest anybody can poke holes in his grappling.
When GSP went to ADCC he got flying armbarred, Shields RNC the guy who armbarred GSP. Who was a world champion black belt. Shields was a purple belt.
I'm not taking this argument any further, I may have been wrong. I personally think GSP will win the ground battle though after watching the both of them. I do think GSP is that good. I hope I'm wrong, because I want some life back to the welterweight division. The counter to your post is that that was a long time ago and GSP has astronomically improved his ground game since.
1 sloppy jab or a mistimed kick and GSP could very well end up on his back for a significant period of time, then it get's very interesting. Anyone doubting Jake's chin or his top game, go watch the Hendo fight
Cool. I agree he has improved. But I do not see it hitting the floor much. GSP is going to light Shields up.
I hope not, I'd like to see GSP get a good challenge on the ground....maybe even see him have to fight from the guard.
