Great idea for a fantasy fight. Would love to see it. No idea what would happen. Not sure the best version of McClellan could ever have had a same day weigh in at 160.

this is again one of those fights that you cant really predict because the fighters would be competing in two different Sports.
in ketchels time "milling in close" (Holding and hitting) was the order of the day. just watch his fight with papke.

but he wouldnt be allowed to fight that way in a modern ring. but he would have to do just that to be effective vs the classier mcclellan.

so the most realistic prediction would be mcclellan wins by dq in three rounds.

The people that saw Ketchell at his best saw something special, but none of us have seen that, and so we don't what they saw or where to rank it.

If you just go by record Ketchell looks stronger than G-Man, but I've never really researched him much. You'd really need to look as news reports of his big fights etc. to get the best idea of where to rate him.

I think unitas makes a valid point about the rule changes, but honestly I think you just have to imagine past it

stanley was coming off his best Career win vs Philadelphia jack o´brien. so i doubt stanley was much greater than that what we got to see.

Ketchel doesn't seem to care to much about the concept of defense.
    McClellan takes him out IMO

He looks like a very very crude boxer in that fight. Plus Papkev was seriously sunburnt...
must have been in pain in the many clinches.

I doubt that we're seeing the "worst " of Ketchel....maybe off night but certainly a "prime" fight as he was dead not too long afterwards.

Are you seriously going to debate McClellan's ability to slip a punch with Ketchels from what's available on film or are you just trying to be a smart ###
    Adleast I made a pick

Hardly fair to compare "from the footage avalible", of a fighter with modern footage of all his big fights avalible, to a couple much worse quality recordings of someone else, neither of which was him at anything like his best.

Ketchell had had multiple 20+ round wars by that point, and was worn out from an insanely hard career, that's why he went to the ranch to recover where he was murdered.

In 1907 he fought 72 rounds in three fights with Joe Thomas in 5months, all of which were insane wars. He had already fough 3 times that years. His career was full of tons of insane wars.

I don't see how anything either of you brought up as a counter contradicts that it was not him at his best, which it clearly wasn't.

Lets put Stanley's insane career in context.

He was 16 in his earliest fight on boxrec, 23 in his last. He fought for about 7 years
He fought 480 rounds in known fights, and it was full of insane wars.

In their careers Joe Louis fought 417 over about 12 years, George Foreman fought 349 over about 18 years, Nigel Benn fought 236 over about 10 years, Chris Eubank fought 393 over about 13 years, Manny Pacquiao is currently on 462 over 23 years, Muhammad Ali fought 548 rounds, over 17 years (substracting the best I can inactive periods)

It's not hard to see why he might not be at his best by the end of it. I really think had he not been murdered he would have ended up like Ad Wolgast
