I really can't think of many fighters that knocked guys out with single shots to the body as often as Gerald McClellan. Damn, i felt that one from here. I remember an interview in which Benn said he was in hospital after their fight with kidney damage.
Took good shots from Jackson and Benn also. He was one of those rare bangers that could also take a hell of a shot. Would have caused a lot of fireworks had tragedy not struck.
He was a vicious puncher, no doubt about it. True power. It's a shame he and Steward split, otherwise he could've developed into a skilled boxer-puncher (which he seemed on the way to becoming) rather than a less refined power puncher.
He wanted to do things his own way and was stubborn. Similar reasons to why Moorer and Steward never lasted. A superb puncher, although he relied on it too much at the best of times.
a wrecking ball of a fighter. he really did want to hurt people in there . i truly believ he would have gone on to become one of the best of the era, an all time great( cue me getting shot down by the established forum police, just my opinion lads ). the benn fight remains the best i've seen . two hard ,hard men with huge punches going at it with bad intentions. such a shame what happened, although a re-match ,if he would have come out intact, could have seen them both ending up like gerald sadly did.
I recently watched Benn-McClellan, I kept thinking 'if only Gerald had a tighter defense on the inside with more headmovement'. I also kept thinking 'he needed some hard 12rounders before having a fast paced 10round war with Benn'. It really was a great fight but an upsetting end, no matter if you dislike Gerald for his dogfighting or not I think this tradegy also highlighted the dangers of weight draining, the brain has no liquid to absorb the punches and its literally rattling around. Was McClellan-Benn during the 36hour weigh in period or before? His power was indeed brutal, some of that may have been to do with the fact he was much bigger than his opponents and only a few werent journeymen if we're honest
Nah, Gerald had some ultra tough types he shook up. Sanderline William's is one of the premiere under appreciated journeymen of the last few decades. Took everyone the distance, only stopped once on a cut. Had a draw against James Toney, SD loss to Nigel Benn... Like I said, went the distance with some of the hardest hitters of his era, like Merqui Sosa, Benn, Don Lee... As far as I know only guy who ever knocked him down was Gerald. Hit him with a right hand flush that sent him flying backwards a few feet. Course Sanderline got up and went the distance.
Gerald is often overrated as a fighter, as I believed he was deteriorating and wouldn't have gone on to better things even had he gotten through the Benn fight. I don't believe however, that he was underrated as a puncher, at least in terms of pure power. The guy was a first class power-puncher, who, again, could've been much better had he honed his technical skills.
Awesome, his left hook to the body is my favourite shot in Boxing. Quality video with a few in it. [YT]Bz4KWIP3mrQ[/YT] Theres meant to be a documentary about him and the Benn fight coming soon called "Fallen Soldier". Should be good.
Agree and disagree, his defense was a weakness BUT offensively he's 1 of the best we've seen from 160-168, obviously the power, but also the speed, athleticision, jab, combinations and precision were brutal. Legacy wise his achievements aren't quite up there, but it should be noted he beat Jones Jnr in the Amateurs. In a prime to prime match up he beats many in history at 160-168 and if there wasn't damage from a blood clot (big if - but many believe this was sustained earlier), he would have beat Benn. I'd certainly see GMAN at his best cleaning out 160 and beating Calzage and Kessler.
The G man makes a lot of people's top 10 p4p punchers of all time lists, so I don't see how his power is underrated. Everybody knows that dude could hit.
