And Michael Moorer. I know amatures are a different kettle of fish, but still impressive. About that fight with Roy- Extract from "My memories of the 80's" by "Iceman" John Scully One year later in the National Golden Gloves in Omaha, Nebraska I saw Roy attempt to win his third straight National G.G. title. He beat Thomas Tate by decision early in the tournament and stopped Future NABF Champ Fabian Williams later on. But it was his third fight of the week that caught everybody's attention. Too bad nobody filmed it because it was a WAR. I was getting ready to go into a different ring in a few minutes (there are three fights going at once at a National tournament) but the fight between Roy and Gerald McClellan was so exciting I hardly had time to warm up. I remember Roy being backed to the ropes a lot during the fight but he would fight off hard with furious flurries. Gerald was strong too, though, and would retaliate the same way. Nice flurries and combinations of hard punches for all three rounds. The decision was a close one and hard to call but, in the end, Gerald won the decision that would end up as the greatest victory of his amateur career. The fight was so tough for Gerald that a month later in camp with Sugar Ray Leonard, he wasn't sparring yet because his jaw was still sore from the fight with Roy. He always seemed much bigger then his opponents.I think in the Jackson rematch he had Jackson by 15/20lbs. He could bang but thats about it.Roy Jones in the pros would have outpointed him.
Beat JC?He would have a punchers chance but JC was much more versatile and would go on to outpoint Gearld.
gerald was a hell of a fighter shame about what happened to him but a man in my gym (the trainer in fact) constantly lands that left hook tp the liver ala hatton, mclellan and he Kd's/ko's heaps of people in our gym he hit me with it once when we had a slug fest and i had to sit on the ropes and try an tye him up so i can almost imagine what mclellan would have done for me i think he would have KO'd anyone if he got them on the ropes
