At middleweight. Charles started at middleweight and beat some pretty good names at that weight. McClellan had KO power at that weight.
You know what, I was going to put a up and nothing else, but thinking about it, McClellan would be a real challenge for the teenaged Charles. He's looking to do damage and an early shot landing big might upset Ezzard's all important rhythm over the shorter distance. Not a foregone conclusion by any means, but big money on Charles for sure.
I don't think there is any footage of Charles at MW. If he is anywhere near as good as he was at LHW, he beats the absolute dogsh*t out of McClellan.
Chatgpt thinks Charles wins a decision over McClellan at MW, but that McClellan is dangerous in the early rounds as Charles chin isn't infallible
Peak Charles would be making 160lbs under the weigh in rules of McClellan’s era. I’d go with Charles to outbox and stop McClellan late in the fight, countering, landing all kinds of combinations and eventually landing relatively at will. McClellan never had the best defence, and Charles was skilled and very explosive, he wouldn’t find it hard to find the target.
McClellan wouldn’t be making 160 w same day, so a better version of Charles (or crappier Gerald) might as well be allowed to fight.
