Well, Carpentier stunned Dempsey only to get knocked out a few rounds later. Although most people have the mental picture of Carpentier being heayvweight, he was a bit smaller than McClellan and didn't have nearly the same firepower. So i don't see why that would be such a surprising scenario.
And the light heavy Tunney floored Dempsey, and had enough power to get his respect. McClellan seemingly can't last two rounds though.
Henry Cooper knocked Ali down. Billy Conn stunned Louis so badly that he actually had to hold Conn out of desperation. Archie Moore knocked Marciano down. Yada Yada Yada McClellan would get hammered against any of them. He lost to Benn too. and no most people dont think of Carp as a heavyweight, the newspaper accounts etc all published that he weighed like 172 lbs.
Nice matchup Chris, some voilent explosiveness in this one. Not much size difference here, peak consistent actual fighting weight would be about 180 to 188 taking into account McClellan's dehydrating - rehydrating foolishness. Two of the hardest hitters to ever grace the old scale cruiser category. Dempsey has been stunned by much lesser punches, but i am doubtful Gerald could finish him and Dempsey has an overall superior two fisted balance. The durability doubt is more on McClellan and i can see Dempsey winning a brutal shootout that probably won't go past 3. I have to make Jack the favourite here.
Not saying Gerald's going to stand up to Dempsey, once again, but McClellan never demonstrated a lack of chin. He actually traded with Julian Jackson and nothing Benn threw at him was the cause of what eventually happened to him, or so most agree.
A few points: 1. McCellan was 1 of the hardest P4P hitters of all times and weighed 180 on fight night. He has power on par with Dempsey, because McCellan had truly devastating athletic accurate power 2. Both fighters were front runners and slowed as the fight progressed 3. McCellan had the better boxing skill, more compact punches and better athleticism 4. McCellan could have moved up to heavyweight and had success with his height, reach, speed and power. 5. McCellans worst defeat came from Nigel Benns pressure, strength and pressure. Dempsey would bring the same tools and also stop McCellan late 6. McCellan was weight drained and would be much better at 180-190 I pick Dempsey to stop McCellan late in the fight after being down early. Suzie asked about Marciano, I would pick the same result, Marciano down early but comes back to pressure and beat up McCellan outlasting him and stopping him late. McCellan hit harder and had a better offense than Moore thats for sure
I would of liked to see McClellan at higher weights. Who the **** knows what would of happened if certain guys moved up. It might not be so ridiculous to make fantasy matchups like this, like it somehow isn't for Fitz even though he's not a completely unique fighter and or human being.
Want to see McCellan take a good contenders head off with 1 shot: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A3H9WncSd68
Careful, its sacriledge to present the scenario of a modern fighter beating or even being competitive with jack, much less one smaller..... Of course its fine that jack can beat any great fighter or modern great even those that are 50 natural pounds or so bigger..... Oh,the irony and double standards! Hype/legend KO1 dempsey/rationality....
The crucial difference is that Tunney was a mobile defensive fighter while McClellan would be standing right in front of Dempsey to be hit. Nobody Dempseys size or smaller could go toe to toe with him and survive. Just nobody. Probably not even Marciano.
He maybe unique but I'd expect McCellan to bring more power, speed, technical skill to the table than Fitz
