Calzaghe's off kilter rhythm slowly takes effect from round 6 onwards. He faces a real threat early from Mclellan who loved to stalk and threw a beautiful straight right with huge power from outside-mid range ( traditionally a good weapon vs southpaws). Joe would be real cautious early using his jab not opening up slowly getting confident. Vs Kessler another tehnical outside boxer/puncher Joe stayed with the jab to the body and quick outside single jabs to establish range and keep Kessler guessing. He slowly built up to his in-out staccato flurries but never got wild. Against Gman he would do the same as they say "don't punch with a puncher". Gman could punch and we wont see Joe saying "he cant punch s##t" as he did in the early rounds vs Lacy. There is a good possibility Joe gets a caught coming in and is dropped within the first 3 rounds but its only a flash knockdown. Joe makes his typical mid round adjustments and wins a UD 8-4. In the late rounds Joe is in control getting braver throwing longer combos but its scoring flurries no where near a Lacy beatdown. Gman could move and box as well he would be able to jab off the backfoot at times once he realises that Joe is slippery and tough enough to handle his power. Joe really seemed to feed off the huge egos of Lacy, Hopkins and RJJ. Their outside street bravado and general dismissiveness of Joe as some protected softie gave him something to prove. Joe also had a big ego but was more quiet about it. Gman was super confident in his abilities he would have fired off lots of trash talking on Joe probably getting under his skin.
Byron Mitchell had Joe drunk :nono Shows more about Joe's ability to weather the storm than his chin that he came back to "stop" Mitchell in that fight.
I think prime Joe was truly a force AT 168, if you look at his earlier fights in his prime, his ability is very obvious. Don't just look at the Hopkins fight and think oh yeah, that's it. No, that was Calzaghe way past his best.
Prime Joe Calzaghe is the GOAT at 168 he would be great in any era. His ring IQ is also underrated he was very smart and made great adjustments just look at the second half of his fight with Hopkins he made better adjustments than a master in Hopkins.
You'd NEVER get Calzaghe in the ring with a puncher like G-man Hell he tried to back out of the Lacy fight claiming " injury" but Enzo kicked his a$$ & made him fight
this is what would happen - joe would drop out of the fight and not turn up, instead fighting will mcintrye again somewhere else.
Calzaghe couldn't throw a legitimate scoring punch PERIOD!!! He was an overated sham. He NEVER legitimately beat Hopkins & he knows it hence running from a rematch in Wales
joe would however be happy to fight blind, paraplegic gman, as he made a habit of facing dangerous fighter who had aged into near retirement. having previously run from prime gman to hide in wales for years, now joe would suddenly find a cure for his fear of flying and travel to the USA to showboat old gman, pretending to hump his wheelchair from behind. and later he would whoop with joy at having decisioned the wheelchair bound old man. After getting floored by the wheelchair user in round 1 of course.
It's not the truth, Joe had a lot of hand injuries in his career. I'm going to be real here I picked Lacy to beat Calzaghe based on hype of seeing him KO a bunch of cans and he looked like a tank I knew of Calzaghe but I had never seen Joe fight before if I had there's no way in hell that I would have picked Lacy to win. Calzaghe beat the **** outta Lacy embarrassed him and proving me and others wrong. Calzaghe was a true ATG and the GOAT at 168 to dismiss his level of skill is being a hater.
I'm surprised GMan is so favored here. Totally disagree. GMan's boxing skills were not all that. He did had monstrous power but Calzaghe is a smart fighter and faster, he would outbox gman.
