Terrible comparison. GM Whoops Lacy badly. As for Calzaghe...I think GM takes him as well but it'd be close
Joe would have been heavily favoured, but it would have been a risky fight for him. Joe was always susceptible to right hands. We saw him have a shootout with Mitchell, and he got dropped by an unknown Euro level guy, as well as a shot Roy and Hopkins. He had a great chin, but he wouldn’t have wanted a shootout with Gerald. It’s a shame that we never saw Gerald have a prolonged run at the weight. He was a very dangerous fighter. He could have knocked out Benn in that first round, and I’m absolutely certain that he’d not have passed a medical for that fight today. There was clearly something amiss even before they fought. So a fully fit version would have been a force at the weight for sure.
That knockdown by Mitchell spun Joe around, damned impressive that Joe got right up and did what he had to do. Courageous dude. Haven't watched the Calzaghe-Hopkins fight in years but I remember feeling that Hopkins won close.
That’s the great thing about a forum. Everyone has their own opinion. Nobody is wrong in these kind of debates.
Remember how ****in great that fight was. Lacy thought he was Iron Mike comin into that...and so did alot of other idiots. Calzaghe showed how one dimensional he was. Joe in the corner sayin his power is **** lol..Lacy was done after that. Never the same.
GMan is wildly overrated by some. Yes he was a hellacious puncher and he beat Jackson twice. But he did so at 160 which wasn't Jackson's best weight, remember McCallum KO'ed Jackson in 2 rounds at 160. He also couldn't put away Benn at 168 so it seems his power while still impressive perhaps wasn't as affective at the higher weight if he could land several flush shots on Benn and couldn't keep him down. What are the chances of him stopping Calzaghe who had a much better chin than Benn. Fact is GMan has never fought or beaten anyone on Calzaghe's level let alone anyone that good at 168. McClellan was far too easy to hit, which is how 2 unknowns out boxed him early in his career, Calzaghe not only would win but do so convincingly in a one sided fight, bar the odd big right hand from GMan and this is coming from someone who wasn't a fan of Calzaghe.
Personally I don't like how telegraphed some of McClellan's punches are. Calzaghe had crazy fast reflexes and it would be difficult for GM to land clean on him I think. Zaggers probably slappety-slaps his way to a UD
I’ve just seen this: (you may not have seen it before) When he left the Kronk, that was it really. I knew he'd lose sooner or later. I heard that he wasn't doing his work, he was sparring every day but that was as far as it went.. this is what I heard that he didn't do anything else apart from try to knock guys out in the gym. He wasn't working on strategy, he wasn't doing his work. Now Gerald had good, good stamina when he was with me just as all my fighters do because the heated, low oxygen surroundings in the basement of Kronk forces you to have good stamina. I had Gerald on the rowing machines after sparring, and I prepared special meals for him before bouts. When Gerald left me, his training suffered and his eating suffered, and his strategy suffered, and of course his stamina suffered bigtime. After the Jackson re-match, he moved upto super-middleweight to follow Roy Jones because they were on a collision course.. but he went right at Nigel Benn and that's suicide. Why didn't he just pace himself? That was suicide against Benn. I heard that he was eating junk like burgers all throughout the training camp for the Benn fight, he had a hard time putting on weight but I would prepare special meals for him and have him eating lot's of good food.. but I heard he was eating a lot of junk like burgers all the time before Benn and I even heard that he wrapped his own hands in the dressing room before the fight. He wouldn't of 'made it' without me, I couldn't believe he was wrapping his own hands. I would drag the bandage tightly and precisely across the base of the wrist, securing the middle part of the thumb to bring balance to the hand, bulking up over the outside knuckles to level off the hitting area at the top of the fist, which relieves pressure on the two more prominent knuckles, then bringing the bandage around and under to form a comfortable ball in the palm of the hand - Gerald's fist was such a shape that when I did this he could punch through a wall!" - Emmanuel Steward taking of Gerald McClellan aka ‘G-man’ who turns 56 years old today.
He was never the same after leaving Manny. He didn’t have the discipline. I’m sure you’ve probably seen one of the documentaries on the Benn fight before. I think there’s a number of them what have been aired. The one I’ve seen tells me that he was never fit to fight Benn that night. He was blinking excessively etc, even before he’d even got to the ring. So something was definitely amiss there. We just never saw the best of Gerald. Manny is absolutely convinced that a healthy, disciplined version would definitely have beaten Roy and cleared out the SMW division. Regarding Joe, he’d have been a big favourite. But he didn’t really have crazy reflexes. He was actually quite easy to hit with right hands. And even against low level opposition too. It wasn’t hard to find Joe. But of course, he had a great chin.
I'm well aware that prior to the Benn fight he was basically a mess, I've watched the documentary and obviously there were a lot of mistakes made prior to that fight. But reality is, he never had the mental side down, all talent, but lacked the discipline or the intelligence to be at his best. Yes some hypothetical version of GMan might be a monster but what we saw was a very flawed individual and boxer and I wouldn't pick him over a proven great super middleweight like Calzaghe, Toney, RJJ etc. I even think prime Eubank probably beats him as his aggressive style and defensive holes would suit Eubanks counter punching style. Plus GMan's power wouldn't crack Eubanks granite chin at all.
No, I wouldn’t have picked him either. But he’d have had a chance. He was a dangerous guy. He nearly had Benn out in just a round, and that was after he’d been excessively blinking, even before getting to the ring. All hypotheticals with him at SMW, but I believe he’d have been a huge force under different circumstances. It’s a shame that he couldn’t have remained healthy and stayed with Manny.
