Would it be the slippery and slightly taller southpaw Nunn or the impaling powerful fan-favorite Gerald McClellan? Discuss this Middleweight fantasy-fight.
Apart from the One-off Sambu Kalambay destruction which seemed to be one of those Freak results that happen from time to time, Nunn was never really a destroyer of men, he frustrated many to defeat like the cautious Frank Tate in his title winning effort, and with that annoying smirk picked and poked them to distraction, if not destruction, the smirk making it look like he had so much more in hand, i wonder if he really did, and Old Roldan, a slow Barklay a puffed up Sterling, a Last Legs Curry, scratch below the surface and its not a great list of title challengers, James Toney..when he eventually found that Smirk Baring Mandible, found little by way of resistance...A case of Second to Done ? Leaving external ring issues aside, Gerald was certainly unpleasant to opponents inside it, he was not wild, he had excellent balance, and dynamite in both fists, a precision predator in fact, ignoring specific's its been argued enough, but lets just say it took a superhuman effort of willpower for Nigel Benn to endure in their fight, and i do not think Michael has that durability or indeed instinctual "ability" to visit anywhere near those depths of Animalistic resistance, Geralds left hook to the body may of taken a few rounds to find its desired target...but once that area is zeroéd in on ...the Headshots may not be that far behind...and as per the Toney defeat...as soon as Gerald finds that Chin...The Smirk will no longer Lurk....allowing a Wide eyed Nunn several rounds of quick-stepping before he gets nailed...i like Gerald circa 7th...
That's a good description! Nunn did break down his opponents -- mentally and physically. Nunn scored many stoppages from deflating his opponents like a hot-air balloon. Could he avoid McClellan and land his own counter shots enough to take him to deep waters and drown him out? I am not sure. For me it would be Nunn by decision or McClellan by early-mid fight stoppage.
Nunn would have beaten Gerald-people forget how hard a prime Nunn was to hit and Nunn had a little pop in his punches as well.Gerald dangerous for 3/4 rounds then Nunn dominates and wins either tko9 or decision.
He took Kalambay out in 1 round-NOBODY ever stopped Kalambay but Nunn.He took Parker out in 2 with 1 punch-only other fighter to stop Parker-John Mugabi.Nunn beat the hell out of Kronks Knox in 4 rounds. He made then middleweight contender Watts look slow and shut him out the ENTIRE 12 round bout(the same Watts who would latter drop Steve Collins but lose a decision)He also outpointed Tinley-who was a very good boxer. You have to remember nobody wanted to fight Nunn at one point and the only reason why Tate finally did was he was forced to defend his title against Nunn and you saw what Nunn did to Tate. Nunn wasn't a known puncher but he had good pop in his punches when he sat down-hell he hurt Toney a couple of times in that bout. The real problem with Nunn was his management couldn't keep him out of his hometown and his slide begun at the Barkley fight-he just got lazy in training and was always going home and getting into trouble.
I see a Nunn on the run type of fight where he out lands McClellan, but steers clear of action. A stinker type of result. Nunn via UD
