I think McClellan, i think he can take Jones's best punch but Jones will not be able to take his power and speed, early KO.
The great fight that never happened. I know McCellan had the height, speed and power to give Jones great difficulty. He had all the tools offensivley. Don't discount Roy Jones`s power though. At `68 he could really crack. I don't know how well he could take Roy`s power. Jones chin was pretty good in the middleweight divisions. Ofcourse he didn't get hit often. I do believe Jones would have his track shoes on at least early. His feet were so fast and his was such a great athlete. He may get Gerald reaching in and catch him with one of those lightening counters. Could go either way. If Im pressed I gotta go with the more proven fighter Roy Jones by decision or late TKO.
I think some of the shots McClellan took against Jackson were harder than any Roy could catch him coming in with, I would think McClellans size strength speed and punching power would just make him too much for Jones. He did it in amateurs when Roy was a far more accomplished fighter than Gerald was at that time and he still got him.
Roy Jones jr, pretty easily. Yeah, really. How's Mclellan going to hit? He doesn't have a means of delivering punches that would work consistently on Jones.
He has a good jab. He's fast and has a shittonne of power. He should have been outclassed by Jones in the amateurs right seeing as Roy was so so so much further ahead of him at the time of the bout... He should have easily beat McClellan right... And add that McClellan dosen't have to keep hitting him over and over the fight to win either, you said he can't hit Jones consistently he comes out firing power shots and needs one to land on Jones's chin to knock him out... With his speed size and power that wont be too hard to do.
Jones by UD or Jones by a bodyshot seems the most likely. Or G-man lands a wild powershot with all his bodyweight behind it somewhere.(small chance though)
A lot of stock seems to be getting placed in Geralds three round (and from all accounts narrow) amateur win. Jones improved **** loads from his debut and his blend of insane speed, thudding power, fast twitch reflexes and mobility spells big prfoblems for McClellan. McClellan looked clueless at times when Nigel Benn began backing him up and defensively he was poor though his chin looked rock. Jones will definately hit McClellan and he was a better combination puncher than Benn, more accurate and more unpredictable. I don't see how Gerald will catch Jones solid enough to get him out of there (which is the only way he could win imo) as Jones almost had unique defensive capabilities when at the top of his game. It's unfortunate that the fight didn't happen but from watching both guys extensively Jones looks on another level as a fighter and would win surprisingly easily.
McClellan does have stylistic adantages, with his range/power/speed/straight punches, in some ways though he's easy to hit and has stamina issues and can't fight inside too well. Still he's never better the combination of speed/power/defence that Jones brought to the ring and not close. Toney easily got the better of him in sparring. So it's an interesting one Well I doubt it given Jackson went 12 with Tate who Jones took out in 2. Jones and McClellan were allot bigger than Jackson That's not really how boxing works, if you punch and miss and get hit with a hellacious counter punch and keep doing the same thing you're going to get knocked out. Prime Jones will likely have a significantly better chin too. He took Sosa's punches who was the man Toney said hit him hardest. He took allot of bombs against Tarver in their first fight too.
Uhmm am i missing something here?? I said McClellan needs one to land on Jones's chin to knock him out i didn't say he needs to just throw random punches and he will eventually get to him... And i really don't think Jones has a better chin at all...
I guess this is my fault making a Roy Jones Jr thread... The only threads he looses in are ones of him vs George Foreman ect and even then alot of people give him a shot... :huh
Deal with it. Jones was a beast at 160 and 168 it's hard for people to choose against him because he just looked so amazing.
Oh yay somebody who says beast and is on Jones's nutsack what a surprise just what this thread needed :thumbsup
