I'm with flea on this one. I'm don't think he 'deserves' this and I dont take any satisfaction out of seeing anyone in his condition, but I do find it hard to have much sympathy for the guy.
I think some good was taken from this. The BBB of C improved it's safety regulations after reviewing the fight. DKP was made to actually pay up for what they owed. It was a tragedy what happened, and I guess that some people do not have the mental capacity to come to terms with what has happened. I do not know, personally, anyone involved. So like most here, you just review your own thoughts, from the point of view of if you were in that situation. Thus I have concluded, I can understand to a point why the McClellan family feel so bitter. That is not to say I think they are right, or that innocent people involved in the incident (Benn), deserve their scorn.
"Boxing is like war, and in war you have to be prepared to die" Gerald McClellan **** you Gerald, pity you didnt die. I bet he wouldnt give a flying **** if he put somebody in a wheelchair... wasn't it his own trainer who called Gerald a "violent, violent, violent, violent, violent man"?
Most of us have read the guardian article that mentioned his love of dog fights as well as running over flamingos in florida just for the sheer fun of it. Clearly he was a disturbed individual. But I always wonder what he could have acheived had that accident not occured. It always looked to me like a Benn headbutt started the 'blinking' from Gerald and clear discomfort from that moment on. He had all the tools to dominate the sport and knock out Roy Jones but from what iv read from manny steward he lacked the discipline and attitute to ever live up to his potential.
No defence, no adaptability and would've had to eventually move up and fight people his own size where his toughness would've been seriously tested (he showed a good chin) Apart from raw power what did he show against the few decent opponents he faced? By the way, all straight forward bangers, so how much versatility did he demonstrate? Jones would've made a mockery of him. G-Man would not have has time to set his feet, would've got caught whenever Roy threw and shipped a Hellacious beating. McClellan is one of the most overrated fighters ever because of this kinda' post. If you've watched him, you'll see he wasn't infallible even before the Benn fight, and Benn showed he wouldn't spark everyone he hit with the first punch he threw. An old McCallum or Reggie Johnson would've taken the **** out of him.
I am with Flea on this one, i dont wish this on anyone, , if this accident had not happened he would still be out fighting dogs and being some cruel ******* in general, i dont have much sympathy for him really
ive always thought someone like mccallum would have schooled him for every second they were in he ring :good
We'll never know but he already beat Jones in 88 and had great timing along with his vaunted power and chin. "Gerald McClellan is the most talented fighter I have ever worked with" -Steward His hand wraps may have been an issue in the Benn fight if u beleive Manny Stewart but clearly he was taking shortcuts and wasted his talent.
Interesting debate, He was clearly a **** of a man and it is hard to feel sympathy for him, but I still do to an extent, Its a horrible way to live the rest of your life, They say in life theres nothing worse than death but I dunno? McClellan may be living it, for that I do have sympathy.
