It wasn't just that though. It was similar to the Hatton fight recently only far worse, everytime Benn was in trouble and McClellan was launching an attack, the ref would jump between them and push him away.

a couple of Gmans gym mates had been saying he had been blinking funny for rather a long time and really really really did not like getting punched in the head as it sent him dizzy in a odd way.

however, the ref certainly did not help.

however the first round knock out of the ring was legit, you do have 20 secs to climb back in the ring. great fight sad outcome.

Apparently he was eating quarter-pounders during training for the Benn fight, i think it was Manny Steward who said that.

Yeah, there were some clashes of heads and a lot of rabbit punches.

Also, McClellan was said to have been suffering from frequent headaches after the first Jackson fight, and was known to dehydrate himself a lot to make weight.

I've heard McClellan did have some weight issues at MW which is why he moved up. The Benn fight was at smw. Judging by the fact he weighed in a full 3lbs shy of the limit I doubt he had any trouble at all making 168, and so was very, very unlikely to have been dehydrated in that fight.

You're right he won. No excuses here. But there was something seriously wrong with GM in that fight and it obviously started to affect him early on...and is what ultimatley caused him to take a knee both times. It wasnt that Benn would have hurt him if there wasnt something else going wrong in his brain.
I think we all know that a healthy GM destroys Benn. I mean he knocked him out of the ring in the first round and even with something wrong with him, he still manages another knock down later in the fight.

Benn got the Win and thats that. End of story and an end to a man's career, now lets move on.

you underestimate benn massively. nobody blasts benn out without experiencing trouble first, the guy was a ****ing animal with ATG power and the heart of a lion. benn can put the hurt on any MW/SMW that ever lived.

I think if anything McClellan underestimated Benn and was aiming just to blast him out....which he very nearly did. he didn't count on Benn's resilience though.

Remember reading a piece by a reporter who watched Mclellan in training in the run up to the fight. He said it was strange that all Mclellan seemed to be concentrating on was the big straight right hand punching down, just like the one's that caught Benn early. He just spent ages on the heavy bag one-punching, All other defence tactics and training seemed to be on the back burner.

He nearly got away with it but not quite.
