Very good with the potential to be an ATG. His power was scary, He had a nasty mean streak and he had a great array of punches, IMO. That left hook to the body was sublime.
I guess he was ok, his main motive was to get his opposition out of there as quickly as possible, when that didn't work there was no plan B.. His corner.was ****, he obviously wasn't built for long tough hard fights the first time he was in a real war, he went out and never came back, i personally thought the guy was a ****ing *******.. I remember watching the Benn fight and was jumping for joy when Benn knocked.his ass out..
I remember having a big bet on Benn to beat him...way back in the days when misguidedly i used to gamble...it was a scary fight...how on earth Benn won ... But the fight crippled the American...although he seemed an awful man...it was sobering to learn the next day what had happened. I suppose like all big punching bullies...someone comes along that can weather the storm and find a way to beat them. Nigel Benn was outstanding that night. He showed that the Brits of that era should have tested their skills against the yanks more often.
It's neither here nor there but Benn won that fight through excessive fouling and help from an incompetent ref.
Huge McClellan fan, Gerald was always lumped in as the typical banger and brawler because of how he dispatched opponents and the violent, furious way he did it. What gets overlooked is his the fact that he was a very balanced fighter with underrated boxing skills. Gerald was very smart and methodical with excellent punch selection, like you said he was a body snatcher in his own right.. he was fast set up his punches well, he was like a surgeon the way he would carve up his opponents and leave them broken.. It was a shame to me the way his career ended, but like you said he was just 2-3 fihts away from the same result with Benn if they never waged such a brutal assault on each other.. Gerald could have beaten anyone at 160-168 in the history of the sport not saying he would but he was on par with the best of them.. He had more than a punchers chance he was a an excellent all around fighter with a great chin
:good, how on earth Benn won? because he had steel on his balls that's why, and he was built for long term punishment, unlike his adversary...
Yup probably the worst reffing in a big fight ever perhaps. Should have been scored a 1st round KO. The ref let Benn get away with all kinds of ****. Unnecessary breaks when Benn was hurt, low blows, rabbit punches, head butts. Benn was on drugs too, m.otherf.ucker ran out of the arena before he could be drug tested. Based on those grounds alone the dubious "victory" for Benn should have changed to a no contest. Benn and the french d.ouche ref should have been banned for life like Luis Resto and Panama Lewis after they ruined Billy Collins jr's life due to their flagrant cheating.
I agree that it could have just as easily been scored a first-round KO for Gerald, but c'mon man, it's not even close to what Resto and Panama Lewis did. It was a legitimate victory for Benn. McClellan had 9 more rounds to beat him and couldn't.
