Where do you rate his power In Middleweight History? Along with where do you rate him as a fighter In Middleweight History?
Power he could definitely be top 5, middleweight ranking all time I have no idea, but not in the top 20.
Arguably top 5 for power but not even top 20 at middleweight, he was an exciting and powerful fighter but also flawed, as his two early losses showed. He relied way too much on his power and ability to take a punch, he was far too easy to hit and took too many hard punches from big punchers because of that. His resume simply isn't anywhere near good enough to be top 10 or top 20 and even head to head I think his flaws could see him out boxed by smart defensive boxers and perhaps out slugged against a few iron chinned types, I doubt he could do much against prime Hagler who's chin was probably more than a match of GMan's power.
Power: Top 5. His ranking is more problematic. When looking at his actual record and achievements, he falls outside the top 25. But it is unclear whether he entered the Benn fight with a pre-existing brain issue. Most accounts of his training camp leading up to that fight sure make it seem so. And, yet, he almost won by KO in the first round. Had he won that fight and stayed healthy a few years longer, he had the potential to crack the top 20. When on form, he was a beast. And, a skilled one, at that.
Like said his power is top notch. You cant rank him high as a middle though. He would have been a weight shifter in his career though, with Benn he was making his SMW debut. In a few years he would have been a LHW andntowards the end maybe a CW. Alas we eill never know.
I can't think of 5 MW's that were bigger bombers than him. I mean, I'm really trying to think of some harder hitters at MW than him. Maybe Benn? Julian Jackson? Sugar Ray? I know some people will say Ketchel but I can't really place him for obvious reasons. As for his career, he left a lot on the table. He had an abundance of potential but he really didn't fulfil it to the point where he should be placed. I can't really rank him
Its hard for me to gauge him. He came in like two weight classes above the weight he was fighting. I think he did hit hard but no way top 5. Julian Jackson Ray Robinson Rocky Graziano Tony Zale Harry Greg Stanley Ketchel Marvin Hagler
Indeed in their 2003 records book he is no 27 all time greatest punchers with only Ketchel,Hearns,Graziano and Jackson ranked over him as a middleweight class boxer.I guess you could put Langford in there aswell as he campaigned from light to heavy.
See I only know whispers about Rocky G, and Ketchel so I can't personally give a legit answer for whether they are or aren't. I wouldn't doubt it as there are enough qualified guys who would though. Either way, the fact that it's difficult to name very many kind've speaks to G-Man's power.
A complete *******, a true soab. It's hard to me to look at him as a fighter, and not as the soab he was.
I might be in a minority here but i think Roy Jones Jr punched just as hard as Gerald he just wasnt as vicious as McClellan was.
