just to hopefully **** that other blasphemous thread off the ESB board. i like positivity myself and that other thread is guilty of negativity against one of boxing's fallen hero's .
how some schmuk sat behind a keyboard can utter such ignorance really gets up my nose so lets make a thread talking positively about a guy who while being one brutal human being and fighter none the less illuminated the sport in what little time he was given and also provided ,along with another man who doesnt get the recognition he deserves, one of the most provocative nights of boxing of all time, not just recent times, all time.

    cheers.

The truth is that I don't even really like talking about his fight with Benn. From a boxing standpoint it was everything you can ask for but from a human standpoint, it was saddening. Those two men went to a place that night where only a handful of fighters can say they have been. Sadly, some of those guys are no longer with us (Chico Corrales R.I.P.) and McClellan never really came back. It is a place that we as fans can't even fathom being in. Fighting on raw instinct and whatever human resources you have left while your body is ready to shut down. It was a great victory for Nigel Benn but it came with a severe cost as he himself was never the same again albeit in the sense that he was no longer the fighter he was.

I would absolutely love to see the poster who started the other thread tell Nigel to his face that McClellan was overrated.

    A question .....

How do you think Gerald Mclellan would like to be remembered? As a fearsome warrior and world champion prizefighter who went out on his shield or an invalid, a blind and deaf man ruined by the only business that he knew ?

Unfortunately its the saddest part of the fight game when a fighter's heart keeps him going through punishment his body simply can't tolerate. It was a savage fight & both men were never the same from it. I don't know how anyone who calls themselve a fight fan can possibly want to rubbish McClellan on his fight performances inside the ring. Speaks volumes about themselves.

Alot of these guys don't know anything else but the fight game. Their identities are forged in their careers as fighters and when they retire, a part of them dies. I would think that Gerald would want to be remembered as being the former rather than the latter but as time passes and a man's skepticism grows you just never know.

Lennox Lewis was always a man who seemed as though he could take or leave the sport of boxing. This is exactly why he is in the position he is in. If only more fighters had his mindset and were still as dedicated to their craft as he was they would get out of the sport in better shape.

mclellan v benn is a part of boxing history . if people forget about wars like this it is to the detriment of boxing in general and it makes what happened to gerald pointless, worthless. i have watched videos of mclellan in his tragic state and all he cares about is " was i a great champion ?" " do people know my name ? ".
we HAVE to remember fighters like mclellan and benn because it reminds us that this brutal sport has its casualties, but also its heroes. and while we sit behind a keyboard banging on about alien words like resumes and whether this fighter was shot or this fighter ducked him we need to realise that these guys put their lives on the line to show us about human spirit, giving it all no matter what the cost, and showing us, the average joe what can be achieved.
what would gerald mclellan had done if he didnt become a fearsome boxer, who will be talked about for years? a drug dealer ? jailbird ?dog fighter ? i get so annoyed with people dumbing down this fight to things like " gerald fought dogs, he deserved it ", " benn hit him with rabbit punches ", " the ref was on benns side " when in reality this is the blueprint, the fight than any numptie behind a keyboard should watch if they ever think they could make it in this sport.
    gerald mclellan - legend .

sorry, i am pissed, but i believe in what im trying to say

I actually believe that since his tragedy he has gotten grossly overrated, especially when you see people making comments like "he would have exposed Roy's glass jaw".

Do you know how he trained his dogs?:think

He was a very good boxer, no doubt; but as a human being he was somewhat of a sick ******* (this isn't just my personal opinion, but comes from his former trainers and confidants as well - they all admit that he was a bad guy).

I don't subscribe to the whole "he deserved it" bollocks; I'm not God, so its not up to me to decide who deserves punishment for what; but I don't think we should elevate him up onto some pedestal either, just because he had the misfortune to be seriously injured in the ring.

In the strictly boxing sense I feel he is becoming a tad overrated.

People were putting him on he level of Miranda, personally I don't call that overeating him.
